Overview

'Do Sajan Ki Aur Do Apni Aankhen Ho Gayin Chaar' takes the oldest cliche in Hindustani love poetry - eyes meeting, aankhen chaar - and does what almost no other song bothers to do with it: it counts. Two belonging to the beloved, two of one's own, therefore four. Zeenat Begum sings it with Satish, the hero of Albeli (1945), and it is one of the small number of the film's twelve G. A. Chishti compositions for which a recording and a text have both survived. No lyricist is recorded for it; the researcher who documented the song noted the credit as simply not known, and it is left empty here rather than assigned to one of the film's two named writers by guesswork.

The Music

The tune is a light, forward-leaning duet in the register Chishti reserved for his happier situations: the mukhda states the arithmetic, repeats it immediately, and lands hard on the last word so that the phrase closes like a punchline. Repetition is the whole architecture - the opening half-line comes twice before the sentence is even completed, which is how a 1940s film song made itself memorable to an audience hearing it once in a hall and then wanting it on a record. The two voices trade the halves rather than harmonising, in the standard Indian duet manner.

The Poetry

The phrase aankhen chaar hona - literally 'for eyes to become four' - is the standard Hindustani idiom for the moment two people look at each other and something is settled between them. The lyric's small invention is to unpack the idiom instead of using it: it separates the four eyes into their owners, two and two, before allowing them to add up, which turns a dead metaphor back into an event with two participants. Because the song is a duet, the counting is shared - each singer supplies half the total, and the arithmetic becomes a form of consent. Who wrote it is not recorded.

The Story

It was written up in detail from Geet Kosh material on Atul's Song A Day in July 2020, and that post is the source of most of what is now known about the film's production. Albeli (1945) was made by Talwar Productions of Calcutta and directed by the company's proprietor R. C. Talwar, who also wrote the story; J. S. Casshyap supplied the screenplay and dialogue. Shooting began in Lahore and was completed in Calcutta, and the picture opened at the Central Cinema in Bombay on 22 December 1945. The plot follows a street girl in love with a gypsy boy who is wanted by two other young women as well; Ramola headed a cast that included the actor-singer Satish, Rooplekha, Manorama, Usha, Sunder and Hiralal. G. A. Chishti composed all twelve songs, and Baburao Patel's filmindia gave the film a hostile notice in its March 1946 issue.

The Legacy

The song has no afterlife in the popular repertoire; the idiom it plays with went on to be used by dozens of better-known films, and this early, literal-minded treatment of it was forgotten with the rest of Albeli. Its value is as a specimen: a duet in which a film's hero sings his own part, from the last years in which that was still ordinary practice rather than an exception, recorded by a composer whose Indian output has almost entirely vanished.

Margin Notes

Ramola, whose real name was Rachel Cohen, and her elder sister Rooplekha came from India's small Baghdadi Jewish community, which supplied a striking number of actresses to early Hindi cinema; Arunkumar Deshmukh counts Manorama as a third, although she is elsewhere recorded as the daughter of an Irish mother and an Indian Christian father.

Ramola's stardom came from Khazanchi (1941), the highest-grossing Indian film of its year; the film is credited with making the shalwar kameez popular among Indian women.

Rooplekha, Ramola's elder sister, appeared in only five films in her whole career - Nishani (1942), Shukriya (1944), Albeli (1945), Jhoothi Kasmen (1948) and Jawani Ki Aag (1951) - before marrying and leaving the industry.
