The Monographजीवनी Biography

Shahu Modak (25 April 1918 – 11 May 1993) was born into a Marathi Christian family in Ahmednagar. He was discovered by filmmaker Bhalji Pendharkar and made his screen debut at age 14 in Shyam Sundar (1932), playing Krishna and singing all eight of the film's devotional songs himself — a performance that helped the film run for a silver jubilee. He went on to become one of the first actors in Indian cinema to play a double role, in Aut Ghatkecha Raja / Awara Shahzada (1933).
Modak became best known for playing mythological and saintly roles, portraying Krishna as many as 29 times over his career and earning acclaim for his lead role as a police officer in the social drama Aadmi (1939). His performance as the poet-saint in Sant Dnyaneshwar (1940) made him a household name and the industry's go-to actor for saintly characters; he later played seven different Ramayana characters in Mee Tulas Tuzjhya Angani (1955). Although he stopped singing once playback technology took hold in the industry, his own voice can still be heard in several of his films, including Aadmi, Bharat Milap, Vasantsena (1942), Geet (1944), Daasi Ya Maa (1946), Ramayan (1954) and Main Sundar Hoon (1971). He acted continuously from 1932 to 1986.
A devout follower of Swami Vivekananda and a practicing astrologer, Modak was married to Pratibha Modak, a former Jain sadhvi who later served on India's Central Board of Film Certification. He died in Pune on 11 May 1993; the Manoos Award was later established in his honour.
