Kamavardhini (Pantuvarali) has a note set identical to Hindustani Purvi thaat. This characteristic phrase—particularly the rise from komal Re through antara Ga to tivra Ma, and the characteristic turn Ga-Pa-Dha♭-Ni—reflects the raga's deeply contemplative, sacred character. In Carnatic tradition, the komal Dha is approached with specific gamakas that underline the raga's profound solemnity.

Raag Kamavardhini is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Kamavardhini melakarta (#51). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Romance/Beauty (श्रृंगार), making it suitable for compositions that evoke romantic, beautiful emotions. It is traditionally performed during evening hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Historical Significance

Kamavardhini is the 51st melakarta in the Carnatic 72-raga system, the third member of the Brahma chakra (melakartas 49–54), the 9th of the 12 chakras. It uses komal Rishabha (R1, 1 semitone), antara Gandhara (G3, 4 semitones), prati Madhyama (tivra Ma, M2, 6 semitones), shuddha Dhaivata (D1, 8 semitones), and kakali Nishada (N3, 11 semitones)—a note set that is identical to the Hindustani Purvi thaat. Kamavardhini is also widely known by its popular name Pantuvarali in Carnatic music, and is one of the most important, frequently performed, and profoundly revered ragas in the Carnatic canon. Venkatamakhin classified it in the Caturdandiprakasika (c. 1620 CE). The name 'Kamavardhini' means 'increaser of desire or longing' (kama = desire/longing, vardhini = one who increases), reflecting the raga's quality of deep, sacred yearning. Muthuswami Dikshitar composed the celebrated kriti 'Sri Kamalambike' in Kamavardhini/Pantuvarali. The Trinity and subsequent composers have left a rich repertoire in this raga. It corresponds closely to ragas in the Hindustani Purvi-Dhanashri family, making it one of the most studied cross-system equivalences in Indian classical music.

More to Know- raag-shubhapantuvarali — Shubhapantuvarali — शुभपंतुवरलि — Both have komal Re♭ and tivra Ma♯, but Shubhapantuvarali (#45) has komal Ga♭ and komal Ni♭ — Sa Re♭ Ga♭ Ma♯ Pa Dha♭ Ni♭. Kamavardhini has shuddha Ga (natural third) and shuddha Ni (natural seventh). Shubhapantuvarali with its komal Ga♭ feels darker and more sorrowful; Kamavardhini/Pantuvarali with its shuddha Ga feels more grand and imposing. — Shubhapantuvarali: komal Ga♭ and komal Ni♭; Kamavardhini: shuddha Ga and shuddha Ni
- raag-ramapriya — Ramapriya — रामप्रिया — The adjacent melakarta (#52). Ramapriya has the same lower tetrachord as Kamavardhini — Sa Re♭ Ga Ma♯ Pa Dha♭ — but uses komal Ni♭ instead of shuddha Ni. That single note difference makes Ramapriya feel slightly more incomplete and yearning at cadences, while Kamavardhini resolves more firmly. — Ramapriya: komal Ni♭; Kamavardhini: shuddha Ni
- raag-purvi — Purvi — पूर्वी — Essentially the Hindustani equivalent. Same notes, different performance tradition. Purvi is rendered with Hindustani meend, taan, and the emotional vocabulary of khayal; Kamavardhini uses Carnatic gamaka and the kriti/varnam form. Purvi permits occasional use of both Ma (shuddha) and Ma♯ in some renditions; Kamavardhini strictly uses tivra Ma♯ throughout.
In Film Music
Kamavardhini (Melakarta #51) is one of the more significant and widely recognised melakartas in this batch, known also by the alternative name Pantuvarali. Its note structure — Sa Re♭ Ga Ma♯ Pa Dha♭ Ni — combines komal Re♭ and komal Dha♭ with tivra Ma♯ (raised fourth) and shuddha Ni, creating a scale of considerable emotional weight. In Hindustani music, the corresponding scale is Purvi (Sa Re♭ Ga Ma♯ Pa Dha♭ Ni) — one of the ten parent thaats. Both Carnatic Kamavardhini/Pantuvarali and Hindustani Purvi are regarded as evening-to-night ragas with a mood of deep longing, grandeur, and solemnity.
In Hindi film music, Purvi has been used in some compositions, though it is among the less common thaats in the film repertoire compared to Bhairavi, Khamaj, or Yaman. The raga is associated with a particular brand of restrained, aristocratic longing — not the weeping melancholy of Bhairavi but something more dignified and expansive.
In Tamil and other South Indian film traditions, Kamavardhini/Pantuvarali has a somewhat larger footprint. The composer Ilaiyaraaja has used scales related to Pantuvarali in a few of his compositions. However, I cannot verify specific Hindi film songs attributed definitively to Kamavardhini or Purvi with sufficient confidence to list them as famous_film_songs. The honest position is: Kamavardhini is a significant Carnatic raga with a clear Hindustani equivalent (Purvi), and Purvi has a limited but real presence in classical and semi-classical Hindi music; direct verified film song attributions are not available.
