The dadra was Gauhar Jaan's perfect container: short, syncopated, flirtatious, finished inside three minutes by design rather than compromise. The final-session sides carry a matured voice over the familiar Khamaj colours — the swing intact, the announcement of her own name now a ritual eighteen years old.

लगभग 1920 में, दस से अधिक भाषाओं में क़रीब छह सौ तवों के बाद, गौहर जान का ग्रामोफ़ोन कंपनी से लंबा साथ समाप्त हुआ। जायदाद के मुक़दमों, शाहाना रहन-सहन और बदलती रुचि ने 1900 के दशक का साम्राज्य घिस दिया था। महफ़िलें और दरबार चलते रहे — रामपुर, फिर 1928 में मैसूर — पर जिस भोंपू को उन्होंने भारतीय संगीत बेचना सिखाया था, उसने उन्हें फिर नहीं सुना। जनवरी 1930 में मैसूर में उनका निधन हुआ।

Around 1920, after some six hundred sides in upwards of ten languages, Gauhar Jaan's long association with the Gramophone Company came to an end. Lawsuits over her property, lavish living and shifting public taste had eroded the empire of the 1900s. The katcheri and court engagements continued — Rampur, then Mysore in 1928 — but the recording horn that she had taught to sell Indian music heard her no more. She died in Mysore in January 1930.
