ठुमरी — राग तिलक कामोद (गौहर जान)

A bol-baant thumri in Raag Tilak Kamod by Gauhar Jaan, recorded in Calcutta around 1916 — the founding star of Indian records singing into the new era of the His Master's Voice label.

Tilak Kamod is a raag of bright affection — its signature swoop lends itself to the teasing address of bol-baant thumri, where rhythm-play carries the flirtation. Gauhar Jaan's mid-career discs show exactly this manner: crisp, dancing phrases rather than the long grieving lines of the slower Purab style.

The vasakasajja nayika — adorned, expectant, the lamp trimmed — is Tilak Kamod's natural heroine. The traditional thumri texts in this raag wait rather than mourn: the beloved is late, not lost.

Around 1916 the Gramophone Company's Indian releases began appearing under the His Master's Voice label — Nipper the terrier replacing the Recording Angel. Gauhar Jaan, the catalogue's founding star, thus belongs to both eras: the woman who sang India's first discs was still selling records when the most famous trademark in music arrived in the bazaar.

Gauhar Jaan's 1910s sides are the bridge between the experimental first decade of Indian recording and the consolidated HMV catalogue that would dominate until the talkies. Her Tilak Kamod manner — light, rhythmic, urbane — fed directly into the theatre and early film song.
