ठुमरी — राग देश

A thumri in Raag Desh recorded by Gauhar Jaan around 1914 for The Gramophone Company — the monsoon raag on shellac in the first year of the World War.

Desh carries the monsoon in its bones — the held rishabh like a held cloud, the curling nishad like first rain. Gauhar Jaan's Desh thumris pair that weather with the form's favourite subject, the beloved absent precisely when the season demands company.

The text of this side is not documented. Desh thumris of the period speak in the barahmasa register — clouds, lightning, the empty swing. The words are left unquoted.

The war declared in August 1914 cut the German pressing and supply lines that had fed India's record boom, but the Gramophone Company's Sealdah factory — running since 1908 — kept domestic production alive. Gauhar Jaan, in her early forties, remained its most bankable classical name.

Her monsoon sides are early entries in recorded music's longest-running Indian genre — the rain song — which runs unbroken from these discs to film music's sawan standards.
