The Monographपरिचय Overview

This entry documents a Bhairavi thumri recorded by Mauzuddin Khan for the Gramophone Company in the mid-1910s — Purab-ang thumri at its source, sung by the man the tradition still measures itself against. The exact disc title and session date remain to be confirmed from catalogues.
The Music

Mauzuddin Khan stood at the summit of Purab-ang thumri in the 1900s and 1910s. Where the court singers ornamented, he pleaded: his Bhairavi unfolded as bol-banao — each word of the sthayi turned over a dozen ways until melody became speech and speech became weeping. Contemporary accounts describe listeners in Calcutta mehfils breaking down at his pukar, the sudden high-register cry that became his signature.
The Poetry

Bhairavi is the thumri singer's dawn raag of farewell, and its traditional texts speak in the voice of the abandoned nayika. In Mauzuddin's hands the conventional words of viraha — the unlit lamp, the unreturning traveller — were less recited than inhabited.
The Story

By 1915 Mauzuddin Khan was a legend of the Calcutta salons and a famously reluctant, erratic recording artist. The Gramophone Company captured only a handful of his sides; collectors have prized them for a century precisely because the man himself was unrecordable — a mehfil performer whose three-minute discs are compressed lightning.
The Legacy

Every Banaras thumri singer of the next two generations sang in his shadow. Rasoolan Bai and Siddheswari Devi's bol-banao descends from the idiom he perfected, and Jaddanbai is counted among those who took taalim in his style. His few discs are the missing link between the 19th-century kotha and the modern concert thumri.

Margin Notes

Mauzuddin Khan is said to have had no complete systematic taalim — contemporaries described his art as instinct trained by obsessive listening, polished in the salons of Banaras and Calcutta.

His name is spelt many ways on labels and in memoirs — Mauzuddin, Moujuddin, Mauj-ud-din — one more sign of how little paper the era kept on its greatest thumri voice.
