The elevated Chatussruti Dhaivata (D♯ in file notation, D₃ in Carnatic = approximately the pitch of komal Ni in Hindustani terms) is Tanarupi's most distinctive note; the ascending phrase from komal Re through this raised Dha confirms the raag's unusual character.

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Tanarupi emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Raag Tanarupi is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Tanarupi melakarta (#6). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Heroism/Valor (वीर), making it suitable for compositions that evoke energetic, bold emotions. It is traditionally performed during evening hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Cultural Significance

Historical Significance

'embodying the tana' or 'tone-form') is the 6th melakarta in the 72-melakarta system, belonging to the Indu chakra (1st group, melakartas 1–6). Codified by Venkatamakhin in his Chaturdandiprakasika (c. 1620 CE), it is the last of the six melas that all share R₁ (Shuddha Rishabha, the lowest Re) and G₁ (Shuddha Gandhara, the lowest Ga). What distinguishes Tanarupi from the other five melas in its group is its upper tetrachord: it uses D₃ (Chatussruti Dhaivata — a raised Dha at roughly the same pitch as komal Ni in Hindustani) and N₃ (Kakali Nishada = shuddha Ni). This contrast between the very low lower tetrachord and the elevated Dha in the upper creates a unique tonal tension with no analogue in the Hindustani thaat system. Tanarupi remains a theoretical construct; it appears in lakshana-geet tradition but sees very little concert performance.

In Film Music

Tanarupi is a purely theoretical melakarta with no recorded presence in Hindi or any other regional film music tradition. Its unusual swara combination — particularly the very low Ga alongside an elevated Dha — has not attracted film composers, and the raag does not appear in the standard melodic vocabulary of any Indian film music tradition.
