Shulini's only departure from an all-shuddha scale is the shatshruti rishabha (R3 / tivra Re), an augmented rishabha that has no Hindustani equivalent. The characteristic phrase highlights this single unusual note against the otherwise bright, natural backdrop of shuddha gandhara, shuddha Ma, shuddha Dha, and shuddha Ni.

ऐतिहासिक महत्व Historical Significance
शूलिनी कर्नाटक की 72-मेलकर्ता पद्धति का 35वाँ मेलकर्ता है, जो छठे चक्र 'रितु' (मेलकर्ता 31–36) का पाँचवाँ राग है। शुद्ध मध्यम खण्ड (मेलकर्ता 1–36) के अन्तर्गत वेंकटमखी ने 1660 ई. में इसका वर्णन किया। रितु चक्र के सभी राग षट्श्रुति रिषभ (R3 / तीव्र रे) का प्रयोग करते हैं — एक सूक्ष्म स्वर जो हिन्दुस्तानी पद्धति में अनुपस्थित है। शूलिनी में यह एकमात्र विचलन है, शेष सभी स्वर शुद्ध हैं। 'शूलिनी' शूलधारी शिव से सम्बद्ध नाम है। डॉ. बालमुरलीकृष्ण ने इसमें कृति रची है।

Shulini is the 35th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, the fifth raag of the sixth chakra, Rutu (melakartas 31–36). It belongs to the shuddha madhyama half (melakartas 1–36). Venkatamakhi's Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE) enumerated this scale. The Rutu chakra as a whole (melakartas 31–36) is characterised by shatshruti rishabha (R3), a microtone between shuddha Re and komal Ga that does not exist in the Hindustani pitch vocabulary. Shulini uses this raised Re against otherwise natural (shuddha) upper notes, creating a bright scale with a single chromatic inflection. The name Shulini is associated with the deity Shiva (Shulini = bearer of the trident). Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna composed a kriti in Shulini.
