Shanmukhapriya uses shuddha rishabha (R2), sadharana gandhara (komal Ga / G2), prati madhyama (M2), komal dhaivata (D1), and kaisiki nishada (komal Ni / N2). All notes have Hindustani equivalents, but this exact combination — shuddha Re, komal Ga, tivra Ma, komal Dha, komal Ni — matches no standard Hindustani thaat. The phrase highlights the tivra Ma between the lower komal Ga and the upper komal Dha.

Vadi–Samvadi note

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Shanmukhapriya emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Raag Shanmukhapriya is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Shanmukhapriya melakarta (#56). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Heroism/Valor (वीर), making it suitable for compositions that evoke energetic, bold emotions. It is traditionally performed during evening hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Historical Significance

Shanmukhapriya is the 56th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, the second raag of the tenth chakra, Disi (melakartas 55–60). It belongs to the prati madhyama half (melakartas 37–72). Venkatamakhi's Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE) codified this scale. Shanmukhapriya is among the more commonly performed melakartas: its note-set is consistent with a pentatonic janya raag called Revati (Sa Re Ma Pa Ni, omitting Ga and Dha) which has appeared in South Indian devotional and film music. The name refers to Shanmukha, another name for the deity Kartikeya (Murugan), reflecting the South Indian devotional tradition. Unlike the surrounding melakartas (55, 57) which use atikomal Ni, Shanmukhapriya uses kaisiki nishada (komal Ni), giving it a more accessible quality.

In Film Music

Shanmukhapriya as a complete melakarta scale has not been documented in Hindi film music. However, its pentatonic janya raag Revati (Sa Re Ma Pa Ni, using the Shanmukhapriya note-set without Ga and Dha) has a presence in South Indian film music and devotional settings. The full seven-note Shanmukhapriya scale — shuddha Re, komal Ga, tivra Ma, komal Dha, komal Ni — does not correspond to any established Hindustani raag, and no direct Hindi film song connection has been verified.
