कथा-सार
Synopsisरमेश एक हाज़िरजवाब मगर खाली जेब वाला नौजवान वकील है, जिसे शरारतों की वजह से एक के बाद एक मकान से निकाला जाता रहता है। आख़िर में वह तरकीब निकालता है — नक़ली दाढ़ी और लरज़ती आवाज़ वाले बुज़ुर्ग 'मिर्ज़ा साहब' का भेस धरकर वह शांति के घर में पेइंग गेस्ट बन जाता है। अब एक ही मोहल्ले में उसकी दो ज़िंदगियाँ चलती हैं: बूढ़े मिर्ज़ा साहब की, जिन पर सब भरोसा करते हैं, और बाँके रमेश की, जो शांति से टकराता, झगड़ता और धीरे-धीरे मोहब्बत करने लगता है। नूतन की शांति इस खेल की बराबर की खिलाड़ी है — तीखी, समझदार और दिल से कोमल। ग़लतफ़हमियों और हँसी के इस सिलसिले में कहानी अचानक गंभीर मोड़ लेती है, जब एक साज़िश शांति को क़त्ल के इल्ज़ाम में अदालत तक पहुँचा देती है और वकील रमेश को अपने प्यार की पैरवी करनी पड़ती है। सुबोध मुखर्जी की यह फ़िल्मिस्तान प्रस्तुति देव आनंद की रूमानी-कॉमिक शैली का निखरा हुआ नमूना है, और एस.डी. बर्मन–मजरूह के गीतों ने इसे 1957 की सबसे गुनगुनाई जाने वाली फ़िल्म बना दिया।

Ramesh is a quick-witted but penniless young lawyer, thrown out of one lodging after another for his pranks. At last he finds a trick — donning the false beard and quavering voice of the elderly 'Mirza Sahib', he becomes a paying guest in Shanti's house. Now he lives two lives in one neighbourhood: the trusted old Mirza Sahib's, and dashing young Ramesh's, who teases, quarrels with and slowly falls in love with Shanti. Nutan's Shanti is an equal player in the game — sharp, sensible and tender at heart. Amid the chain of misunderstandings and laughter, the story takes a sudden grave turn when a conspiracy lands Shanti in court on a murder charge, and lawyer Ramesh must plead for his own beloved. Subodh Mukherjee's Filmistan production is a polished specimen of Dev Anand's romantic-comic style, and the S.D. Burman–Majrooh songs made it the most hummed film of 1957.

पेइंग गेस्ट का संगीत एस.डी. बर्मन की उस कला का चमकता नमूना है जिसमें शास्त्रीय गहराई शहरी फुर्ती में ढल जाती है। किशोर कुमार की आवाज़ में 'माना जनाब ने पुकारा नहीं' और किशोर–आशा का 'छोड़ दो आँचल ज़माना क्या कहेगा' — ये गीत देव आनंद की पर्दे की शोख़ी का स्थायी साउंडट्रैक बन गए। 'चाँद फिर निकला' में लता मंगेशकर का दर्द बताता है कि यह हल्की-फुल्की फ़िल्म अपने संगीत में कितने गहरे रंग समेटे थी। मजरूह सुलतानपुरी के बोल नोक-झोंक और तंज़ की उस ज़ुबान में लिखे गए जो आगे चलकर रूमानी कॉमेडी का मानक बनी। बर्मन दा और किशोर की यह जुगलबंदी आने वाले दो दशकों की सबसे क़ीमती संगीत-साझेदारियों में से एक की मज़बूत कड़ी साबित हुई।

The Paying Guest score is a shining specimen of S.D. Burman's art of casting classical depth into urban quickness. 'Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahin' in Kishore Kumar's voice, and the Kishore–Asha duet 'Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya Kahega', became the permanent soundtrack of Dev Anand's screen mischief; Lata Mangeshkar's ache in 'Chand Phir Nikla' shows how many deep shades this light film carried in its music. Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote in that idiom of banter and irony which later became the standard tongue of romantic comedy. The Burman–Kishore rapport here proved a strong early link in what became one of the most precious musical partnerships of the next two decades.
