Biography

Wajahat Hussain Mirza Changezi (20 April 1908 – 4 August 1990) was an Indian screenwriter, dialogue writer, and occasional lyricist, best known for his contribution to some of Hindi cinema's most celebrated films of the 1930s through 1960s. Born in Sitapur and originally trained in photography and cinematography, he moved to Bombay and entered the film industry in 1933, developing a distinctive dialogue-writing style rooted in Awadhi, the Hindi dialect of the Awadh region, and in his grounding in classical Urdu literature and poetry.

Mirza wrote the lyrics, alongside dialogue, for the 1938 costume drama Watan, co-written with Mehboob Khan, with music by Anil Biswas — including the nationalist-themed song "Jahan Tu Hai Wahi Mera Watan Hai." He went on to write dialogue for major productions including Aurat (1940), Mother India (1957) — India's first Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film — and Mughal-e-Azam (1960), for which the dialogue-writing team (Mirza, Kamaal Amrohi, Aman, and Ehsan Rizvi) won the Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue. Mirza won the award again the following year for Ganga Jamuna (1961).

In his later years Mirza moved to Pakistan, where he died in Karachi in 1990.
