Biography

Pandit Indra, born Indar Chand Dadhich in 1905 in Kolkata into a Rajasthani (Marwari) merchant family with roots in the Churu district of Rajasthan, became one of the most prolific lyricists of early Hindi cinema despite remaining largely uncredited in popular accounts of film history. After his father died when he was fourteen, he continued his studies in Calcutta, standing first in his matriculation examination and receiving a gold medal presented by Mahatma Gandhi. In 1928 he moved to Mumbai at the invitation of an uncle who practised law there, and was introduced to the writer Mohan Lal and filmmaker Baburao Patel, who encouraged him to pursue writing.

He wrote his first play, Samajik Kranti, in the Rajasthani language before moving into Hindi film writing for Baburao Patel, scripting Sati Mahananda (1933), Maharani (1934), and Pardesi Saiyan (1935). Over the following decades he emerged as a leading lyricist, credited with more than 875 songs across roughly 130 films between the 1930s and 1960s, and he worked with about fifty music directors, most often Bulo C. Rani, Gyan Dutt, Khemchand Prakash, and Hansraj Bahl. His lyrics featured in films including Bambai Ki Sair (1941), Raj Nartaki (1941), Adab Arz (1943), Tansen (1943), Usha Haran (1949), and Jogan (1950), and through much of the 1940s he was closely associated with Ranjit Movietone.

In 1948 he joined the story department of Gemini Studios in Madras, contributing to major productions such as Chandralekha (1948) and Mangala (1950). In his later years he turned his attention to Rajasthani-language cinema, founding the Kamal Kala Kendra studio and writing and producing films including Gopichand Bharthari (1965). He died in Mumbai in 1968; a road in the city, Kavivar Pandit Indra Marg, was later named in his honour.
