Overview

'Tum Bin Kaun Sahayi' is the bhajan-register song of the Chhamia score, composed by Gyan Dutt to lyrics by Pandit Indra and Kabil Amritsari. The catalogues carry the title and the credits but no singer, so none is entered here. The phrasing is the standard formula of the sant-tradition plea — sahayi, helper or protector, addressed to a deity or to a beloved in terms borrowed from devotion — and it puts the song squarely in the idiom Gyan Dutt had made his name in.

The Music

No recording is available, so the setting cannot be described. It is worth noting, though, whose hands this song was in: Gyan Dutt's largest success before Chhamia was Bhakt Surdas (1942), for which he wrote fifteen songs, and the Ranjit Movietone catalogue he had built through Sant Tulsidas (1939) and Achhut (1940) was heavily weighted towards exactly this devotional register. Of the eleven Chhamia titles, this is the one closest to his established territory.

The Poetry

The construction tum bin — without you — is one of the oldest load-bearing phrases in north Indian devotional poetry, and it works by putting the whole world in the conditional: nothing in the speaker's life has standing on its own, everything depends on a presence that is currently absent. Sahayi, the helper, is a bhakti word rather than a courtly one; it belongs to the vocabulary of dependence rather than desire. What makes such songs useful to film writers is that the same words serve a god and a lover without a syllable changing, which lets a film place a religious-sounding number in a wholly secular story and take the emotional credit for both readings. Whether Chhamia uses it that way is not documented — the film is unavailable and the song's placement unknown.

The Story

Chhamia (1945) was produced and directed by Protima Dasgupta for her own company, P.D.G. Pictures, from an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, with Begum Para in the lead and a supporting company that included the comedian David, the dancer Azurie and Dixit. Gyan Dutt supplied eleven songs to lyrics by Pandit Indra and Kabil Amritsari. The picture was a commercial success and remained the high point of Dasgupta's short career behind the camera; it is not in circulation today, so its songs are known chiefly through catalogue listings and surviving 78-rpm discs.

The Legacy

The recording is not in commercial circulation and does not appear in the standard 1940s reissue compilations; it survives as a title in the Chhamia song list rather than as living repertoire. Its interest today is as part of the documented output of a hit film directed by a woman in 1945 — a body of work that the reissue market has never gone back for.

Margin Notes

Gyan Dutt came to Chhamia from Ranjit Movietone, where he had been house composer since Toofani Toli (1937) and had scored the huge devotional hit Bhakt Surdas (1942); working for an independent producer outside the studio system was a departure for him.

Eleven songs from Chhamia are listed in the gramophone catalogues, all composed by Gyan Dutt to lyrics by Pandit Indra and Kabil Amritsari; the catalogues attribute singers to only a few of them, and the film itself is no longer in circulation.
