ए. एम. ख़ान

A. M. Khan was a Bombay filmmaker of the stunt-and-action era whose documented songwriting credit is the complete nine-song score of Bahana (1942), a social film he also directed, with music composed by M. Sagir Asif. The songs — among them "Kisi Ko Kya Ghayal Karogi Meri Jaan", "Dhire Dhire Gaa" and "Tum Bin Chain Na Aaye Sajan" — carry his name on every lyric of the film, which starred Alaknanda.

Film-history chroniclers describe him as a man of several trades — actor, lyricist and director — whose directing career ran from Woh Kaun (1935) to Jadui Anguthi (1965) and took in some 37 films, most of them stunt, action and costume pictures with trademark titles such as Cycle Wali (1938), Motorwali (1942) and Police Wali (1949). His birth and death dates are not recorded in accessible sources; Bahana remains the film where his own pen filled the credits page, and its nine lyrics are his principal surviving legacy as a songwriter.
