Re Ga Ma♯ Pa Dha♯ Ni Sa' — Sa' Ni Dha♯ Pa Ma♯ Ga Re Sa
Chitrambari has no Hindustani-tradition pakad. This characteristic phrase showcases the raga's two most unusual swaras: tivra Madhyama (Ma♯) and shatshruti Dhaivata (Dha♯), both present in an otherwise shuddha-heavy scale, creating a striking interplay of heightened tension in the upper register.

Raag Chitrambari is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Chitrambari melakarta (#66). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Wonder/Mystery (अद्भुत), making it suitable for compositions that evoke mysterious, wondrous emotions. It is traditionally performed during night hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Historical Significance

Chitrambari is the 66th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-raga system, the last member of the Rudra chakra (melakartas 61–66), the 11th of the 12 chakras. It belongs to the second set of 36 melakartas (prati-madhyama, using tivra Ma). The Rudra chakra uses chatusshruti Rishabha (shuddha Re, 2 semitones) paired with antara Gandhara (shuddha Ga, 4 semitones), and the 6th position within this chakra (Chitrambari) uses shatshruti Dhaivata (D3, 10 semitones) and kakali Nishada (N3, 11 semitones). The result is a scale where the only altered notes are tivra Ma and the raised Dhaivata, while all other swaras are shuddha — an unusual asymmetry that gives Chitrambari a characteristically bright yet tense quality. Venkatamakhin classified it in the Caturdandiprakasika (c. 1620 CE). The name 'Chitrambari' means 'adorned with wonders' or possibly 'variegated sky' (chitra = variegated/wonderful, ambara = sky). It is rarely performed as an independent Carnatic concert raga and is better known as a systematic category within the 72-melakarta scheme.

More to Know- raag-mechakalyani — Mechakalyani — मेचाकल्याणी — Mechakalyani (65th melakarta, Carnatic Kalyani / Hindustani Yaman equivalent) and Chitrambari are adjacent melakartas (65th and 66th). Mechakalyani uses all natural swaras except tivra Madhyam — Re, Ga, Ma♯, Pa, Dha, Ni — giving it the grand, brilliant, romantic quality of Yaman/Kalyani. Chitrambari introduces an elevated Dhaivata (Shatshruti Dha) compared to Mechakalyani's natural Dha; this single change adds extra brilliance and a subtle strangeness to the upper octave, moving it from Kalyani's familiar grandeur toward Chitrambari's more mysterious, ethereal character. — Mechakalyani uses natural Dha; Chitrambari uses elevated Dhaivata (Shatshruti Dha) — one note difference — Mechakalyani has the grand, brilliant, romantic quality of Yaman/Kalyani; Chitrambari is more mysterious and ethereal

In Film Music
Chitrambari (66th melakarta) is a rare and specialised Carnatic raga that has not appeared in Hindi film music. As a raga of the Rudra chakra (the sixth chakra in the tivra Madhyam group), it employs the unusual combination of tivra Madhyam (sharp 4th) and an elevated Dhaivata (Shatshruti Dha), creating a scale of ethereal, otherworldly brightness that sits well outside the tonal vocabulary of Hindustani music. Its primary rasa is Adbhuta — wonder and mystery — and the raga is suited for night-time concerts and compositions evoking the supernatural, the cosmic, and the mystically strange. Hindi film music, shaped almost entirely by the Hindustani classical tradition, has not drawn on Chitrambari or its note set. The raga's concert life is also limited within Carnatic music itself, where it is treated as an advanced and specialized raga for musicians who have mastered the more foundational melakartas. Its beauty lies in its exotic, expansive note set that seems to reach toward the celestial — qualities the name 'Chitrambari' (meaning 'garbed in wonder' or 'of wondrous appearance') itself suggests.
