सूर्यकान्तम् कर्नाटक की 72-मेलकर्ता पद्धति का 17वाँ मेलकर्ता है, जो तृतीय चक्र 'अग्नि' (मेलकर्ता 13–18) का पाँचवाँ राग है। शुद्ध मध्यम खण्ड (मेलकर्ता 1–36) के अन्तर्गत वेंकटमखी ने 1660 ई. में इसका वर्णन किया। अग्नि चक्र के राग कोमल रिषभ (R1) और अन्तर गान्धार (शुद्ध ग / G3) के संयोजन से पहचाने जाते हैं। 'सूर्यकान्तम्' — सूर्य को प्रिय, सूर्यकान्त मणि — नाम इसके प्रायः शुद्ध स्वरों की उज्ज्वलता को दर्शाता है। हंसध्वनि (षट्-स्वर जन्य राग) इसी मेलकर्ता का उत्पाद है। डॉ. बालमुरलीकृष्ण ने इसमें कृति रची है।

Suryakantam is the 17th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, the fifth raag of the third chakra, Agni (melakartas 13–18). It belongs to the shuddha madhyama half (melakartas 1–36). Venkatamakhi's Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE) enumerated this scale. The Agni chakra (melakartas 13–18) is characterised by komal rishabha (R1) with antara gandhara (shuddha Ga / G3) — a distinctive combination not found in Bhairav thaat (which uses komal Dha) or any other Hindustani thaat. Suryakantam — 'dear to the sun' or 'sun-jewel' — is one of the more evocatively named melakartas, and the name reflects the warm brightness that its mostly-shuddha scale imparts. It is parent to janya ragas including the beautiful Hamsadhwani (when notes are omitted). Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna composed a kriti in Suryakantam.

Suryakantam as a complete melakarta scale has no documented use in Hindi film music. However, its most celebrated janya raag, Hamsadhwani (Sa Re Ga Pa Ni, omitting Ma and Dha from the Suryakantam scale), is widely used in South Indian classical and film music, and has appeared in some North Indian contexts as well. The full seven-note Suryakantam scale — with its lone komal Re against otherwise shuddha notes — does not correspond to any established Hindustani raag in the film repertoire.
