The song of Dhanna Bhagat (1945) that Khemchand Prakash gave to Khan Mastana's fullest voice. Its title image — the cage has grown old, the bird must fly — belongs to the nirgun stream of North Indian devotional poetry that runs from Kabir through the wandering singers of Rajasthan and Punjab, and it places the film's saint-hero squarely in that lineage rather than in temple ritual. It carries the highest listener rating of the film's ten songs on hindigeetmala, though on only a handful of votes.

Khemchand Prakash keeps the setting deliberately bare — a slow, walking pulse, a melody that stays low in the male register and climbs only once per line before falling back, harmonium and light percussion holding the frame. The restraint is a choice: the composer who had dressed Tansen (1943) in full darbari ornament here writes something a mendicant could plausibly sing unaccompanied on a road, which is exactly what the film needs.

The cage-and-bird figure is one of the most durable in Indian devotional poetry: the body is a temporary enclosure, the self a bird lodged in it, and old age is simply the wearing-out of the bars. What the image argues is not fear of death but the absurdity of maintaining a structure you are about to abandon — and by extension the absurdity of hoarding land, grain or reputation. Sung at the point in a saint-film where the hero renounces worldly security, it functions as the argument the plot cannot state in dialogue. Pandit Indra writes it in plain Hindi with no Persianate ornament at all, which is itself a period statement in a year when film verse was mostly Urdu-inflected.

Dhanna Bhagat was made at Ranjit Movietone by Kidar Sharma, who had come to the studio from Calcutta and was by 1945 its most literary director. The film dramatises the life of the fifteenth-century Rajasthani saint Dhanna, with Kamal Zamindar in the title role and Kamla Chatterjee as Munni. Khan Mastana — a singer-composer who worked constantly through the 1940s without ever holding a top-tier contract — was given three of the film's ten songs, all of them in the renunciate voice rather than the romantic one.

Of the film's ten recordings this is the one that has kept a small afterlife among collectors of 1940s devotional 78s, largely on the strength of Khan Mastana's delivery. The film itself, panned by Filmindia and long out of circulation, left no wider musical legacy; this song is the reason its soundtrack is still occasionally listed at all.
