Overview

A Khan Mastana solo from Laila Majnu (1945), composed by Pandit Gobind Ram to Tanveer Naqvi's words and issued on Young India MP 658, matrix HP 218, with 'Tumhari Jaan-e-Tamanna' on the reverse. Both the song databases and the disc index name Khan Mastana, so the credit is secure. He was a distinctive presence in 1940s Hindi film music — a singer who also composed, with a rough-edged, carrying voice that producers used for wanderers, fakirs and street philosophers rather than for romantic leads.

The Music

The road song is one of the durable shapes in north Indian film music, and its musical markers are consistent: a walking tempo, a melody that repeats in a way suggesting distance already covered, and a call-shaped opening phrase pitched high because it is meant to reach someone who is moving away. Gobind Ram had the folk vocabulary for it. Khan Mastana's voice was ideal casting — untidy in the way a trained classical voice is not, and therefore credible as the sound of somebody standing at the edge of a road rather than on a stage.

The Poetry

'Raahi' — the traveller, the one on the road — is a word Urdu and Hindi poetry uses to mean both a literal passer-by and the human being understood as temporary, moving through a place he cannot stay in. Addressing him, calling out to a back that is already turned, is a stock situation with a built-in futility: the song exists because the person it is aimed at will not stop. In the Laila-Majnu material this doubles neatly, since the story's whole engine is departure — the beloved carried away, the lover leaving the settlement for the wilderness — and a road song can carry either half of that without naming which.

The Story

Laila Majnu was produced, directed by and starred Nazir under his Hind Pictures banner, with Swarnlata as Laila and a supporting cast that included Khalil, K. N. Singh, Gope, Anita Sharma, Rajarani and Maqbool. Khan Mastana appears on at least three of the twelve songs, which makes him the most-used male voice on the soundtrack after Rafiq Ghaznavi's playback for the hero. The disc that carries this song, Young India MP 658, credits Pandit Govindram as composer on the label; the pressing was made by the National Gramophone Record Manufacturing Company, Bombay.

The Legacy

Khan Mastana is one of the figures who has slipped almost entirely out of general memory while remaining familiar to anyone who works through 1940s soundtracks, where his name recurs as singer and occasionally as composer. Songs like this one are the reason: not hits, but reliable character work, the sound a producer reached for when the scene needed a voice from outside the drawing room. The record's survival is again what makes the entry possible at all — without the label, this would be one more 1945 title with a name attached and nothing behind it.
