श्री कृष्णार्जुन युद्ध

Shri Krishnarjun Yudh dramatises the Puranic episode in which Krishna and Arjun — the closest of friends, brothers-in-law, and in the Bhagavad Gita charioteer and warrior — are driven to take up arms against each other. The chain begins with a discourtesy: Chitrasen inadvertently humiliates the sage Gabal, who goes to Krishna and asks that the offender be beheaded with the Sudarshan Chakra. Chitrasen's wife Chitrangini carries her plea to Subhadra, Krishna's sister and Arjun's wife, who is moved by it and gives her word that the condemned man will be protected — then asks Arjun to make that word good. Bound by his wife's promise, Arjun must place himself between Krishna and a vow Krishna cannot break, and the duel that follows threatens not merely a friendship but the balance of the universe. Mohan Sinha produced and directed the film for his own banner, Murari Pictures, with Prithviraj Kapoor, Shobhana Samarth, Shahu Modak, Trilok Kapoor, Kanhaiyalal, Menaka Devi and Rattan Bai in the cast; catalogue notes describe it as a remake of Krishna Arjun Yudh (1934).

Ten songs are documented for Shri Krishnarjun Yudh in the standard catalogue listings, all of them composed by Jagannath Prakash. Six of the lyrics are credited to Yashodanandan Joshi, two to Safdar Aah Sitapuri, and two — 'Geeta Dharm Ki Ye Kahani' and 'Ye Kaisi Thakurai' — carry no lyricist credit at all. Singer credits have almost entirely been lost: only 'Ye Kaisi Thakurai' names a voice, Khan Mastana, who in the same year was also working on Laila Majnu and Humayun. For the other nine songs no singer is documented in any source consulted, and none has been guessed here — those credit arrays are deliberately empty. No recording from the film appears to circulate today in any streaming catalogue, video archive or reissue compilation, so melody, raag, taal and tempo are left unstated throughout rather than reconstructed. What the ten titles do show is an unusually wide brief for a single assignment: patriotic invocation (Dhanya Hai Bharat Bhumi), Gita philosophy (Geeta Dharm Ki Ye Kahani), a celestial-court hymn (Indrapuri Devo Ko Pyari), sakhi-mode Braj devotion (Vandan Kare Ri Sakhi), an earthy dance number (Naach Gulaabi Naach), and four lyrics of love, longing and interiority.

Mohan Sinha (1903–1984) directed the film for Murari Pictures, the production house he owned; indiancine.ma (record EGD) and the catalogue listings both name Murari Pictures as the banner, so he was in effect his own producer. Working through his own house is the likeliest reason a picture on this scale could carry a cast of Prithviraj Kapoor, Shobhana Samarth, Shahu Modak and Trilok Kapoor while employing a music director with no other visible credits — an independent could gamble on an unknown composer in a way a studio contract system could not. The writing here is credited to Yashodanandan Joshi and Safdar Aah. One oddity worth recording: Sinha's own Wikipedia filmography, which runs from Fashionable India (1935) to Shan-e-Hind (1960) and lists over thirty titles, contains no 1945 entry at all. His direction of this film rests instead on hindigeetmala, the Wikipedia list of Hindi films of 1945, indiancine.ma and Shahu Modak's own filmography, all four of which name him.

The film's interest today is less in what survives of it than in where it stands. 1945 is the year the Bombay mythological was being squeezed between the social film and the big studio musical, and Shri Krishnarjun Yudh is a clean specimen of the form at that moment: a genuinely starry cast, a small independent banner, ten songs, and a composer — Jagannath Prakash — whose name is attached to virtually nothing else in Hindi cinema and about whom no biographical record has been traced. It is also a snapshot of Mohan Sinha immediately before his best-remembered stretch: within roughly eighteen months he would direct Omar Khaiyyam and 1857 (both 1946, both among that year's biggest earners) and give the teenaged Mumtaz Jehan Dehlavi the screen name Madhubala. And it places Shahu Modak — the actor who played Krishna in around thirty films across a career running from 1932 to 1986 — inside yet another Krishna picture, alongside a Prithviraj Kapoor who had founded Prithvi Theatres the previous January and was already dividing his life between the screen and the stage.

Shri Krishnarjun Yudh has left no afterlife of the kind its cast might suggest. No print is known to be in public circulation, none of its ten songs appears in the reissue compilations or streaming catalogues that preserved the popular 1940s repertoire, and its composer left almost no other trace in the industry. What it does preserve is a record of how much Hindi cinema of this period has simply gone: a film with Prithviraj Kapoor, Shobhana Samarth and Shahu Modak in it survives as a list of ten song titles, one singer credit and a plot summary. Kept here as a complete catalogue entry rather than a reconstructed one, it is most useful as a marker — of the mythological's last decade as a mainstream form, and of the many working musicians of the 1940s, Jagannath Prakash among them, whose entire documented output is a single film's song list.
