Released on 15 April 1938, Nirmala was a Bombay Talkies social picture directed by the German film-maker Franz Osten. The studio's signature world — a tidy household, middle-class relationships and a reformist tone — was present here too. Devika Rani held the title role, and opposite her stood Ashok Kumar, who appeared on screen as Ramdas. Behind the camera lay the disciplined enterprise built by Himansu Rai and Devika Rani.

The score was composed by Saraswati Devi — the first woman music director in Hindi films and the musical soul of Bombay Talkies. Born Khorshed Minocher-Homji into a Parsi family, she had trained in Hindustani classical music under Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. The studio gave her the name Saraswati Devi. Her clean, melodic idiom lent this domestic story its gentle voice.

Since Achhut Kanya in 1936, the pairing of Devika Rani and Ashok Kumar had become a public favourite, and Nirmala carried that partnership forward. Bombay Talkies films are remembered less for plot than for their tasteful manner — measured acting, clean sound, and the easy flow of songs. Nirmala belongs to that lineage, where music was not apart from the story but a limb of it.
