Sagar Movietone's Gramophone Singer (1938) — a film about a singer, starring Surendra and Bibbo with music by Anil Biswas. A mirror held up to the late-1930s song economy, when the gramophone and the cinema were competing for the same voice.

In 1938 Sagar Movietone chose an unusual subject — a song about song itself. Gramophone Singer is a love triangle: the famous gramophone singer Sundardas, happy with his wife Mohini, and the even more popular singer Tilottama, smitten with his voice. The hero's profession was the plot — a voice that sold on records.

Direction was by V.C. Desai and Ramchandra Thakur — Thakur's first turn as director. Music was by Anil Biswas, lyrics by P. Sudarshan, Zia Sarhadi and Balkrishna Bohra. The screen pair was Surendra and Bibbo, with Prabha. Surendra's sung-and-acted role cemented him as the singer-hero whose voice sold both tickets and records.

The subject was no accident. In the late 1930s two industries fought over the same song — the gramophone of labels like HMV, and the talking picture. Singers were still the actors themselves; playback was not yet the norm. Gramophone Singer turned that economy into story — the screen holding up a mirror to the machine it was competing with.
