Released on 24 November 1938 from New Theatres of Calcutta, Street Singer was Phani Majumdar's first Hindi film as director. It follows two childhood friends — Bhulwa, played by K. L. Saigal, and Manju, played by Kanan Devi — who grow up to earn their living singing in the city's lanes. The film was the Hindi version of the Bengali Sathi.
R. C. Boral's world of melodyसंगीत आर.

The music was by R. C. Boral, the lyrics by Arzu Lucknavi. The screen pair sang several duets — 'Lachhami Murat Daras Dikhaaye', 'Suqun Dil Ko Mayassar', 'Sanwariya Prem Ki Bansi Suna'. Boral wove the voices of Saigal and Kanan Devi into the rhythm of the story, giving the plainness of street singers a classical touch. This was the signature of New Theatres.

Street Singer brought Kanan Devi nationwide fame and shaped her image as a 'melody queen'. The studio's leading lady since 1937, Kanan Devi refined her Hindi diction and singing here under R. C. Boral's tutelage. Her brisk-tempo style was heard in some of the studio's biggest songs — and her pairing with Saigal became unforgettable.
