On 14 March 1931, W.M. Khan's fakir sang 'De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe' in Alam Ara — the first song of Indian cinema, recorded live to a hidden harmonium and tabla, and today entirely lost.
A fakir stretches out his hand on screen14 मार्च 1931 की शाम, बंबई के मैजेस्टिक सिनेमा में, परदे पर एक फटेहाल फ़कीर प्रकट हुआ और ख़ुदा के नाम पर भीख माँगने लगा — 'दे दे ख़ुदा के नाम पे प्यारे, ताक़त है गर देने की'।

On the evening of 14 March 1931, at the Majestic Cinema in Bombay, a ragged fakir appeared on screen and began to beg in the name of God — 'De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe Pyaare, taaqat hai gar dene ki' (Give in the name of God, dear one, if you have the strength to give). It was no grand romance, no hero-and-heroine duet. It was a humble street-corner supplication, performed by W.M. (Wazir Mohammed) Khan. Yet in those three minutes, Indian cinema sang for the very first time — and never again fell silent. Alam Ara was India's first talkie, and this fakir's plea became its first song — and therefore the first song of all Hindi film music.

Alam Ara had several songs, but historians fix 'De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe' as the first — because in the film's narrative it is the earliest song to appear on screen. It is a fakir's song, not a background number; the performer sang it himself, on the spot, before the camera. In that era this was the only way: playback singing did not exist in India until 1935. So whoever was seen on screen also did the singing — voice and face in a single breath. That is what makes this small begging-song so large: it is not merely the first film song, but India's first piece of live, in-camera sync sound to carry a tune.
A harmonium and a tabla, just out of frame'आलम आरा' की ध्वनि तानार सिंगल-सिस्टम रिकॉर्डर पर सीधी फ़िल्म पर दर्ज होती थी — एक ही पट्टी पर तस्वीर और आवाज़, साथ-साथ।

Alam Ara's sound was recorded straight onto film on a Tanar single-system recorder — picture and voice on one strip, together. That meant there was no room to add music afterwards; whatever was meant to play had to play in the moment. So the accompanists — the harmonium and tabla players — were seated just beyond the camera's reach, right beside the actor, so they would stay out of frame yet still reach the microphone. No orchestra, no rehearsal-room recording — just a hidden pair of musicians and a singing fakir. India's first 'music direction' was born of this improvisation.
A song of which not one line survivesसबसे दुखद विडंबना यह है कि भारत के इस सबसे पहले गीत की कोई रिकॉर्डिंग आज मौजूद नहीं।

The cruellest irony is that no recording of this, India's very first song, exists today. Alam Ara is a lost film — its last known reels perished decades ago, and the songs were never pressed as gramophone records (the practice of issuing film songs separately on disc had not yet begun). So we know what the first song was, who sang it, how it was recorded — but we can never hear it. It is the emptiest, most echoing shelf in Indian cinema: a song immortal in history, yet silent in sound.

· What was the first song ever sung in Indian cinema?
'De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe Pyaare' — sung by W.M. (Wazir Mohammed) Khan as a fakir in Alam Ara (14 March 1931). It is regarded as the first song of all Hindi film music.
· How was this song recorded?
Live — straight onto film on a Tanar single-system recorder. The harmonium and tabla players were hidden just out of frame, beside the actor, because playback singing did not yet exist (it arrived only in 1935).
· Can this first song be heard today?
No. Alam Ara is a lost film and no gramophone records of its songs were ever made, so no audio copy of this song survives today — only its history remains.
