Calcutta's Monopoly Breaks Apart

Before 1909, if you wanted to record a gramophone record, there was only one realistic option: go to Calcutta. The Gramophone Company's offices were there. The best-equipped studios were there. The most influential artists and negotiators were there. A musician from Bombay wanting to record had to arrange travel to Calcutta, find accommodation, wait for studio availability, and complete their sessions within a narrow window before returning home. A Madras musician faced an even more daunting journey—a week by rail across the subcontinent. This created structural advantages for Calcutta-based artists. They had easy access to the studio. They could re-record, experiment, negotiate at leisure. Musicians from other regions had to compress everything into brief, expensive trips. It also meant that the industry's decision-makers, all based in Calcutta, had an intimate understanding of Calcutta's musical culture, but only a superficial knowledge of music elsewhere. The result was a catalog that reflected Calcutta's tastes and traditions, even as it claimed to represent all of India. By 1909, the Gramophone Company recognized the business problem. The market was growing beyond Calcutta's capacity. If they wanted to capture the wealth of India's musical diversity, they needed to be where the music was.

Bombay: The Second Center Rises

Bombay, the commercial capital of India, was the logical second choice. The city was already a hub for theater, film, and entertainment. It had superior port facilities, bringing Western technology and international business sensibilities. The Gramophone Company opened its second major studio in Bombay in 1909, a facility nearly equal to Calcutta's in sophistication. The impact was immediate. Musicians from Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Western India no longer had to travel to Calcutta. They could now record locally, with lower travel costs and logistics. More significantly, Bombay's recording facility was staffed with engineers and managers who understood the region's music. They could work more intelligently with Marathi theater singers, Gujarati folk musicians, and the evolving film music culture that was beginning to take shape in the city. The studio became a gathering point—musicians from across Western India began to congregate there, share techniques, and create a distinct Bombay recording culture. Within months, the Bombay office was competing with Calcutta in terms of output and was exceeding it in terms of commercial success. Albums of Marathi Natya Sangeet, Gujarati bhajans, and Western Indian instrumental music began flowing out of the Bombay studio with remarkable velocity. The Gramophone Company's leadership in Calcutta had to confront an uncomfortable reality: Calcutta's musical culture was not the center of India, merely one region among many.

Madras and the South Awakens

The opening of a recording studio in Madras in 1909 had consequences every bit as significant as Bombay's, though they would take longer to fully manifest. Madras was the gateway to South India—a region with its own distinct classical traditions, devotional music practices, and emerging film culture. The Madras studio, staffed with engineers who had to learn Carnatic music from scratch, initially operated haltingly. But within months, something remarkable happened: the studio attracted not just established musicians, but young innovators. Tamil composers who were experimenting with film songs began to record. Carnatic musicians, sensing an opportunity to document their tradition, brought younger disciples to the studio. A conversation began to form—between the old and the new, between classical purity and commercial adaptation, between tradition and modernity. The Madras recordings of 1909, while fewer in number than those from Calcutta or Bombay, captured something unique: the sound of a musical tradition consciously reflecting on itself, preparing to evolve. By opening a studio in Madras, the Gramophone Company had inadvertently created a space where South Indian musicians could begin to develop their own recording vocabulary, their own aesthetic, their own future. Within a decade, Madras would rival Bombay and Calcutta as a recording center. South Indian film songs recorded in Madras would eventually dominate the Indian market.

Lahore and the Northwest Connection

Before Partition, Lahore was a major cultural center of India—seat of Sikh traditions, home to court musicians of Punjab, and a hotbed of musical innovation. By 1909, the Gramophone Company had established a recording facility in Lahore as well, capturing the music of the Punjab and Northwest regions. The Lahore studio gave new visibility to forms that had been somewhat marginalized in the Calcutta-dominated catalog: devotional music of the Sikh tradition, Punjabi folk songs, and the sophisticated court traditions of the Mughal remnant courts. The expansion to Lahore represented a recognition that the recording industry could no longer be orchestrated from a single center. The geography of music itself had changed. A musician in Lahore no longer had to travel thousands of miles to record. A folk singer in remote regions could approach the local recording facility with a collection of traditional songs and have them documented. For the first time, India's recording infrastructure was genuinely distributed—not perfectly so, but distributed enough to democratize access. The effect was to shift power from the center (Calcutta) to multiple regional nodes (Bombay, Madras, Lahore). Musicians who might have been unknown outside their region could now make records that would circulate nationally. The industry had been decentralized, subtly but irreversibly.

The Geography of Authority Transforms

Perhaps most significantly, the decentralization of recording infrastructure in 1909 transformed the geography of musical authority in India. Before this moment, Calcutta-based musicians had held the power to define what was authentic Indian music, what was worthy of preservation, what represented the nation's musical identity. Court musicians and Khayal masters could lecture about tradition. Critics could dismiss regional forms as provincial or commercial. But once recording facilities were distributed across multiple cities, this authority collapsed. A Bombay studio engineer could develop expertise in Marathi music equal to any Calcutta expert's knowledge of Khayal. A Madras musician could record Carnatic traditions without needing the permission or validation of a Calcutta authority. The nation's musical identity could no longer be dictated from the center—it had to be negotiated among multiple regions, multiple traditions, multiple voices. By 1910, the consequences of the 1909 expansion were already visible. Indian music was no longer being presented as a unified whole, defined from above. It was being understood as plural, regional, diverse. The gramophone's geographic expansion had accomplished something that political movements alone had not: a genuine democratization of cultural authority. Musical traditions that had been considered minor or marginal now had spaces in which to develop, record, and circulate. The recording industry had become not a tool of cultural homogenization, but an instrument of cultural pluralism.
