Bombay Talkies' Durga (1939) — a rural tragedy directed by Franz Osten, with Devika Rani in the title role and music by Saraswati Devi. A village tale from the era before playback singing.

In 1939 Bombay Talkies turned the lights of its modern studio onto a village story — Durga. It was directed by the German filmmaker Franz Osten, who had spent years shaping the studio's rural-drama tradition. At its centre stood Devika Rani in the title role. A rustic world built from urban machinery was a cherished irony of Indian cinema in that era.

The film's music was composed by Saraswati Devi, the music director of Bombay Talkies and counted among Indian cinema's first major women composers. As the convention of the time required, the performers sang their own songs — playback was not yet common. So the melodies of Durga flowed in the voices of the on-screen actors themselves, story and song bound in a single body.

Durga is a rural tragedy — a girl raised in nature's lap, an ailing aged mother, and one sorrow after another falling on the heroine despite the sympathy of a newly arrived village doctor. It belonged to the line of Bombay Talkies social dramas that brought the ache of rural India to the screen. Devika Rani embodied this tender, resolute heroine.
