B Praak's 'Ve Mahiya' from Sarzameen (2025) is a Punjabi-inflected lament composed by Vishal Khurana with lyrics by Kausar Munir, released by Saregama on 16 July 2025. Sung by the Chandigarh-born artist known for 'Filhaal' and 'Mann Bharya,' it channels the centuries-old Punjabi mahiya folk tradition — call-and-response songs of longing — into the emotional fabric of Kayoze Irani's Kashmir-set thriller. The slow-tempo melody, anchored in Raag Kafi's characteristic minor inflections, gives B Praak ample space to deliver the kind of gut-level pain that has become his vocal trademark.

Vishal Khurana — who scored Jugjugg Jeeyo and Govinda Naam Mera — brings a measured restraint to 'Ve Mahiya.' The arrangement opens with sparse piano, then layers acoustic guitar before the string section enters at the first chorus, building an elegant swell. Khurana avoids the trap of over-producing a pain song: the spaces between notes are as expressive as the notes themselves. B Praak sings in his native Punjabi, and the shift from the film's Urdu-Hindi dialogue into Punjabi registers the geographic memory of Punjab — the language of rivers and separation — carried into Kashmir's mountains.

Kausar Munir — whose credits include Ae Dil Hai Mushkil's title song and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara's 'Senorita' — roots 'Ve Mahiya' in the classical Punjabi mahiya form: short, punchy two-liners addressed to a distant beloved. Here the beloved is simultaneously a person and a homeland. The word 'watan' (homeland) shadows every image, giving the song its double resonance in a film about a soldier's divided loyalties.

B Praak, born Pratik Bachan in Chandigarh in 1986, began as a music director for Punjabi pop before his playback debut with 'Mann Bharya' (2017) made him a breakout star of Bollywood pain songs. For Sarzameen, director Kayoze Irani wanted a voice associated with the land and loss of Punjab to sing a song about a different kind of partition: a family torn apart by radicalization. B Praak's casting in 'Ve Mahiya' was therefore dramatic rather than merely musical — his voice carries the baggage of 1947.

'Ve Mahiya' represents the continuing evolution of B Praak as one of the defining voices of 21st-century Hindi-Punjabi popular music. The song extends Kausar Munir's string of successful female-gaze (and here, homeland-gaze) Bollywood lyrics and Vishal Khurana's reputation for restrained, orchestra-led production. As Sarzameen became a streaming hit despite critical dismissal, 'Ve Mahiya' surfaced as the album's most emotionally resonant offering.
