तराना — अमीर ख़ुसरो की दी हुई अमूर्त बोलों की सौगात — 78 आरपीएम के तवे के लिए जैसे बना ही था: समेटने को कोई कथा नहीं, बस स्थापत्य और रफ़्तार। गौहर जान के तराने पूरी लय पर सधे सुरों की नुमाइश थे — बोल तबले की तरह छूटते हुए — और निर्मम ध्वनि-भोंपू के सामने साँस की पकड़ का आदर्श प्रदर्शन।

The tarana — Amir Khusrau's gift of abstract syllables — was tailor-made for the 78 rpm side: no story to compress, only architecture and speed. Gauhar Jaan's taranas were showpieces of clean intonation at full tempo, syllables struck like tabla bols, an ideal display of breath control for the unforgiving acoustic horn.

गौहर जान ने अपनी शुरुआती बैठकों से ही तराने रिकॉर्ड किए; 1910 के दशक भर वे उनके कैटलॉग में बने रहे। लखनऊ परंपरा में तालीम पाई और दर्जन भर ज़बानों में रवाँ गौहर तराने को वही विश्व-नागरिक पहचान-पत्र मानती थीं, जो वह इतिहास में रहा है।

Gauhar Jaan recorded taranas from her earliest sessions onward; they remained in her catalogue throughout the 1910s. Trained in the Lucknow tradition and fluent in a dozen tongues, she treated the tarana as the cosmopolitan calling-card it historically was.
