Overview

The one Pratima song fronted by a male voice, and the one on which Arun Kumar Mukherjee — a Bombay Talkies playback singer through the first half of the 1940s, taking the composer's chair on this film — appears as a performer on his own score. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh credits 'Arun Kumar, Others', so the unnamed support is documented even though the supporting singers are not; hindigeetmala and MySwar list Arun Kumar alone. No recording of the number is in circulation.

The Music

No audio of the number has surfaced, so its setting cannot be described from the recording. The credit itself is the significant musical fact: a composer casting himself as the lead male voice on his own soundtrack, which in 1945 Bombay was an ordinary economy for a studio's in-house singer and also a statement of confidence. HFGK's 'Others' indicates additional unnamed voices, which fits the documented opening — a call-and-answer arrival, the sort of number a chorus is built for. That remains an inference from the words rather than from a heard performance.

The Poetry

The lyric is Narendra Sharma's and only its opening is documented. It announces an arrival — a girl from Roopnagar has come, and a boy from Preetnagar answers her — which places it in the very old Hindi film habit of building a song around the entry of a character, usually with folk or semi-folk colouring. The two invented place-names, 'city of beauty' and 'city of love', are the whole conceit: the song is a meeting staged as a geography. Beyond that, nothing about the poem can be stated, and this entry does not attempt to.

The Story

Arun Kumar Mukherjee had rendered playback for Bombay Talkies in Bandhan (1940), Basant (1942), Kismet (1943), Hamari Baat (1943) and Jwar Bhata (1944) before Pratima credited him as music director. He was a cousin of Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and the producer Sashadhar Mukherjee. On Pratima he composed all seven songs and sang on two of them, fronting this one. The film — P. Jairaj's directorial debut, with Dilip Kumar and Swaran Lata — was released on 14 December 1945.

The Legacy

The recording is not in circulation and the catalogue sites that list it note that no audio is available to them. Its documentary value lies in the credit: it is one of the few places where Arun Kumar Mukherjee is on record as both composer and singer of the same song, at the exact point where his career pivoted from the microphone to the score sheet. That second career ran to Hatimtai (1947), Parineeta (1953), Shamsheer (1953), Samaj (1954) and Teen Bhai (1955) before his death in December 1955.

Margin Notes

Arun Kumar Mukherjee died of a heart attack on 6 December 1955, in Ashok Kumar's arms, while the cousins were returning from the trial show of Bandish (1955).

The Hindi Film Geet Kosh credits the song to 'Arun Kumar, Others', so the film's own composer led it with support that the record never names; the online databases drop the 'Others' and list it as his solo.
