The film adapts Kalidasa's classical Sanskrit drama Abhijnanasakuntalam, and the music — Vasant Desai's first independent assignment — weaves Hindustani classical raga structures into accessible film melody.

Vasant Desai, deeply grounded in Hindustani classical music, made Shakuntala his first independent score after providing background music for earlier Shantaram films. The composition reflects his signature approach: raga-rooted melody shaped to the dramatic demands of the scene, sung in Jayashree's clear, classically inflected voice.
