The Monographपरिचय Overview

A duet with chorus, sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali and Khan Mastana and composed by Pandit Gobind Ram to Tanveer Naqvi's words. It is among the best-documented songs in the film: the Young India disc MP 662 survives with a readable label giving side B, matrix HP 219, the title in Devanagari as 'Zindagi Ka Karvan', the performers as Zohrabai Ambalawali with Khan Mastana and chorus, and the composer as Pandit Govindram. The song databases carry the same song under the title by which its opening is better known, 'Ja Raha Hai Karvan'.
The Music

A caravan song has an obvious musical shape and the tradition uses it consistently: a steady walking pulse, a melody that repeats without resolving, and voices layered so that the chorus can suggest a group moving off while the leads stay in the foreground. Gobind Ram, whose training and working idiom came out of Lahore and the Punjab film-song tradition, had that vocabulary readily available. Putting Zohrabai's trained, full-throated tone opposite Khan Mastana's rougher character voice gives the duet an audible difference of texture — the classical instrument against the street one — which is a large part of what makes the pairing work.
The Poetry

The caravan is one of the governing images of Urdu poetry: the company of travellers that assembles, moves and disperses, standing at once for a literal desert crossing and for the passage of a life or a generation. It carries a built-in cruelty, because the caravan's departure is never negotiable — the traveller who is not ready is simply left. The record label's title, 'Zindagi Ka Karvan', makes the allegory explicit, naming life itself as the thing moving off. In a story set among desert tribes, where Laila is taken away with her family and Qais stays behind, the image is not decorative at all; it is a description of what physically happens.
The Story

Young India MP 662 puts this song on the reverse of 'Fariyaad', so a single ten-inch shellac disc carries one Gobind Ram composition and one by Rafiq Ghaznavi, with Zohrabai Ambalewali singing on both sides. The pressing was made by the National Gramophone Record Manufacturing Company, Bombay, and the label is printed in Roman, Urdu and Devanagari — a small indication of who the record was expected to reach. The film itself, Nazir's Hind Pictures production with Nazir as Majnu and Swarnlata as Laila, is otherwise thinly documented, which makes this surviving disc unusually important to any reconstruction of its music.
The Legacy

The song's afterlife is that of a well-preserved artefact rather than a popular record. Because the disc survives in a private collection with its label legible and has been catalogued and digitised by record collectors, this is one of the few Laila Majnu numbers whose credits can be stated without hedging — which in turn makes it the anchor against which the film's other, contested attributions are checked. For historians of pre-Partition Bombay music that documentary role is worth more than the song's original commercial reach, which appears to have been modest.

The surviving Young India disc MP 662 gives this song on side B, matrix HP 219, under the Devanagari title 'Zindagi Ka Karvan', with performers Zohrabai Ambalawali, Khan Mastana and chorus, and composer Pandit Govindram.

The same disc carries 'Fariyaad' on the other side, composed by Rafiq Ghaznavi — one 78 with a song by each of the film's two composers, both sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali.

The record label is printed in three scripts — Roman, Urdu and Devanagari — which was standard practice for Bombay film discs aimed at a linguistically mixed buying public.
