“Bhairavi Thumri — Late Sessions” represents Gauhar Jaan's c. 1919 Gramophone Company recordings in Calcutta — the closing stretch of the first recording superstar's career, sung in the farewell raag Bhairavi with sarangi and tabla on His Master's Voice 78s.

The late Gauhar Jaan sides show a voice deeper and more economical than the dazzling 1902 debutante's: fewer fireworks, longer glides, the Bhairavi komal swaras leaned into rather than displayed. The acoustic horn, by now a familiar adversary, gets her most settled art.

Bhairavi thumri texts speak of partings — dawn after the night of union, the beloved at the door. Sung by an artist whose own gramophone era was closing, the conventional words acquire an unintended autobiography.

By 1919 Gauhar Jaan had been the face of Indian recording for a generation — the artist who sang into Gaisberg's horn in 1902 and announced her own name onto the wax. Litigation, extravagance and changing fashions were thinning her fortune, and within a year or so her long Gramophone association would end. The late sides are the sound of an empire's last province.

Her final-period recordings close the founding chapter of Indian recorded music. When her discs ceased, the industry she built kept her conventions — the three-minute khayal-thumri side, the star's announced name, the female superstar herself — as its permanent grammar.
