The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Badariya Baras Gayi Us Paar' is the number by which Moorti (1945) is still remembered at all. Bulo C. Rani set it in raag Tilak Kamod and divided it between three voices — Khursheed, the film's leading lady and its principal singer; Hamida Banu, then at the very start of her playback career; and Mukesh, four years past his 1941 debut in Nirdosh and still months away from the Pehli Nazar song that made his name. A three-singer side was an unusual thing in 1945, when the solo and the duet accounted for almost the entire market. The image at the centre of Pandit Indra's lyric is the monsoon cloud that bursts on the far bank and not on this one — the standard north-Indian figure for a rain that falls everywhere except where the waiting woman stands. Sharad Dutt's survey of Bulo C. Rani's career names it, alongside the songs of Chand Chakori, among the composer's hits of the period.
The Music

Tilak Kamod is a light-classical raag of the Khamaj family — an evening melody that has always lived closer to thumri, dadra and folk song than to the grave khayal repertoire, which is exactly why composers of the 1940s reached for it when they wanted a rain or a village mood without the weight of a full classical treatment. Bulo C. Rani keeps the setting modest, in line with the Ranjit house sound: harmonium and light percussion under the voices rather than the swelling string sections then coming into fashion at other studios. Multi-voice sides of this period almost never attempted Western-style harmony; the interest lies instead in the change of timbre as the line passes from Khursheed's trained, forward-placed voice to Hamida Banu's lighter one and then to Mukesh's darker male register.
The Poetry

The badariya — the rain cloud — is the oldest working metaphor in north Indian song, and Pandit Indra uses it in its most exact form here: the cloud that has already emptied itself 'us paar', on the other side, is a rain that has been given to somebody else. In the barahmasa and viraha traditions the monsoon is the season in which the absent one is supposed to return, so a rain that falls on the wrong bank is not weather but a verdict. The verse does not argue or accuse; it simply reports what the sky has done, which is the older and more restrained way of writing the complaint.
The Story

Moorti was a Ranjit Movietone social directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi, with Motilal opposite Khursheed. No print is known to survive and no plot summary is preserved in the reference literature, so the picturisation of this song cannot be described; Atul's Song A Day, which posted it in October 2011, noted that only the audio survives and could not say who mimed Hamida Banu's lines on screen. What is certain is the studio context: Ranjit, founded by Chandulal Shah in 1929 and one of the largest production houses in Bombay, kept a house composer, a house lyricist and a stock company, and Moorti was assembled out of exactly those parts.
The Legacy

This is the Moorti song that made it into the secondary literature. When Sharad Dutt wrote his account of Bulo C. Rani for Millennium Post in 2019 — built on material gathered from the vintage-music historian Nalin Shah — it was 'Badariya baras gai us par (Khursheed/Hameeda/Mukesh)' that he named as the film's super-hit, and it is one of the few Bulo C. Rani songs from the Ranjit years for which a raag attribution has been recorded at all. On hindigeetmala it still stands at the head of the Moorti listing with the highest user rating of the ten, and is filed under the site's 'Rain Songs' category.

Sharad Dutt, writing on Bulo C. Rani for Millennium Post, records that this song was set in raag Tilak Kamod — one of only two Moorti numbers for which a raag attribution survives anywhere (the other is 'Ambuwa Pe Koyal Bole' in Saranga).

A side shared by three singers was rare in 1945; on this one Khursheed, Hamida Banu and Mukesh — a singing star at her peak, a newcomer in her teens and a newcomer in his early twenties — all appear together.

hindigeetmala heads its own listing of the song as 'Badariya Aa', but its permanent URL, Atul's Song A Day and Sharad Dutt all give the fuller line 'Badariya baras gayi us paar', which is the form used here.
