Overview

One of five Khursheed numbers in Prabhu Ka Ghar (1945), 'Nadi Kinare Sanjh Sakaare' takes its title from the two ends of a village day — evening and early morning — set at the river's edge. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh and myswar both credit the song to Khemchand Prakash, with words by Pandit Indra. No recording of it circulates publicly today, so what can be said about it rests on the credit line and on the title's own idiom rather than on the sound.

The Music

The Khemchand Prakash credit places this among the Ranjit numbers the house composer kept for himself on a picture his newly independent former assistant was also scoring. Khemchand Prakash's writing for Khursheed in these years — the Tansen (1943) manner — favoured an unhurried melodic line with the voice carried high and clear over a light rhythmic bed, and a riverbank song of dusk and dawn would sit naturally in that register. The actual arrangement is not documented and is not reconstructed here.

The Poetry

The title works entirely through Hindi folk-poetic shorthand. 'Saanjh sakaare' — evening and daybreak — is the standard way village song marks not a moment but a repetition: the same errand, the same watch, done over and over. Attaching it to 'nadi kinare' (at the riverbank) sets the recurrence at the place where women of the village came for water and where, in this poetry, a woman also comes to look down the road. Pandit Indra, a Ranjit staff lyricist who worked most of his career in this plain, unornamented Hindi rather than in filmi Urdu, is writing in his native idiom here. The song's content beyond the title is not documented.

The Story

Prabhu Ka Ghar was a Ranjit Movietone social-religious drama directed by Wajahat Mirza, with Khursheed opposite Trilok Kapoor. Khursheed was the studio's principal singing heroine at the time and carried five of the film's eleven songs. No print of the film survives in the accessible record and no contemporary plot summary has been traced, so it is not known which situation this number was written for.

The Legacy

This is one of the Prabhu Ka Ghar songs that did not outlive its film. It appears in the standard song catalogues and in Saregama's listing for the album, but has not been reissued, uploaded or written about, and no commentary on it exists. Its value now is documentary: it is part of the last stretch of the Khemchand Prakash–Khursheed working relationship at Ranjit, before he moved to Filmistan and she left for Pakistan in 1948.

Khursheed sings five of the eleven songs in Prabhu Ka Ghar — more than any other voice on the soundtrack.

Both hindigeetmala and myswar credit this number jointly to Khemchand Prakash and Bulo C. Rani, one of the six Prabhu Ka Ghar songs with a shared rather than an individual composer credit.
