The Monographपरिचय Overview

The second of Hamrahi's two chorus numbers and the only one written for the film rather than borrowed from Tagore. Munshi Zakir Hussain's Hindi lyric addresses jawano — the young — and urges them to keep advancing; R.C. Boral sets it as a group march. Wikipedia's account of the soundtrack notes that two of the film's songs were sung as chorus, and neither hindigeetmala.net nor any other catalogue we consulted names an individual voice on this one, so no singer is claimed here.
The Music

A march is the least characteristic thing in R.C. Boral's catalogue, and that is exactly why it is interesting here. Where the rest of the Hamrahi score is built on solo voice, prelude and melodic sweetness, this number is built on pulse: a steady walking tempo, phrases cut short enough for a crowd to sing back, and unison rather than the ornamented single line Boral wrote for Binota Bose. It is functional music in the best sense — written to move bodies on screen and, by extension, an audience in the stalls.
The Poetry

The address is straightforward: jawano, young men, keep going. Zakir Hussain writes in the plain, unornamented Hindustani register that pre-independence exhortation songs used — no Persianate difficulty, no metaphor that needs unpacking, short imperative lines that a group can carry. What is worth noticing is what the lyric does not do. It names no enemy, no empire and no leader. Read alongside a plot in which a millionaire steals a poor writer's novel and hires goons to break his own workers' strike, the vagueness reads less like caution than like double aim: the same words serve the anti-colonial and the anti-capitalist reading at once.
The Story

Hamrahi was released in 1945, in the last stretch of the independence movement and two years after the Bengal famine that shadows Bimal Roy's Bengali original. New Theatres, the Calcutta studio that made it, was not a political production house, but this film is its most openly political picture: an idealistic newspaper writer, a plagiarising industrialist, a strike, and a rich woman who walks out of her class. A chorus urging the young forward belongs to that architecture rather than to the romance. The exact sequence in which it is picturised is not documented in the sources available to us, and is not asserted here.
The Legacy

This is the most obscure song on a soundtrack that is itself remembered chiefly for one number, and it has never had an independent afterlife: no famous cover, no anthology placement, no gramophone legend. Its interest is documentary. Hamrahi's score is the point at which R.C. Boral — the composer who built playback singing at New Theatres in the 1930s — was writing a factory-strike march and Tagore's future national anthem for the same picture, in the same year, a season before he faded from the front rank of Hindi film music.
