Biography

Ramchandra Pal was an early Hindi-cinema music composer, singer, and actor, born in Calcutta in 1909. He trained in music under Ustad Badal Khan and began his film career around 1930-31, later composing for the Tamil productions Bilwamangal (1932) and Sarangdhara (1935), and the Bengali films Rajani and Indira (1936).

He became closely associated with Bombay Talkies, where he is credited with introducing Western orchestration into the studio's film scores, notably with Bandhan (1940), while also blending folk, classical, and light-music elements in his compositions. His scores included Kangan (1939), Punarmilan (1940), and Naya Sansar (1941, with Saraswati Devi), and he appeared on screen in Azad (1940). In total he composed music for around 20 films.

As the industry changed through the 1950s, Pal found it harder to sustain his earlier prominence; he wrote, directed, and scored a film titled Rajnandini that was never released, and later lived a retired life in Shivaji Park, Bombay. He died on 21 January 1993. He is a distinct figure from the better-known composer C. Ramchandra (Ramchandra Narhar Chitalkar).
