प्रेम की जय

'Prem Ki Jai' is the shortest title in the eight-song listing for Nal Damyanti (1945) and the most declarative: a jaikara raised not to a deity but to love itself. Ramchandra Pal composed it to words by Lakshman. In a mythological whose plot consists of a marriage tested by dice, exile, possession and separation, a hymn to love's victory functions as the film's thesis statement. The catalogues record no playback singer for it.

A jaikara title implies a chorus, and choral affirmation was one of the few places where Ramchandra Pal's documented liking for a Western-influenced ensemble could be used without friction in a mythological. That is an inference from his known method at Bombay Talkies, not a description of the recording, which is not in circulation. Filmindia in July 1945 rejected the film's songs as a body, saying they sounded taxing and unworthy of the situations they served.

The jaikara form — 'jai ho', 'ki jai' — belongs to public devotion and to political assembly alike; by 1945 Indian audiences had heard it in temples and at Congress meetings in the same year. Turning it on prem rather than on a god or a leader is a small, deliberate move: it takes the vocabulary of collective affirmation and spends it on a private bond. In the Nalopakhyana that is precisely the argument being made. Damayanti's fidelity is not a private virtue in the tale; it is the force that reverses a curse, restores a king and returns a kingdom, and it earns a public shout.

The Janak Pictures production was Chhotubhai Desai's, directed by Kumarsen Samarth, and it reached Bombay screens on 9 June 1945. Prithviraj Kapoor and Shobhana Samarth played the couple whose bond the film's title song celebrates; Trilok Kapoor played the brother who destroys their fortune at dice.

Like the rest of the score, the song did not survive into the popular repertoire and no recording is in circulation. It remains on record only as a title in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh listings for 1945.
