Overview

'Chod Gaye Jeevan Dhan' is the lament in Ramchandra Pal's score for Nal Damyanti (1945), with words by Lakshman. The phrase jeevan dhan — the wealth of one's life — is the Hindi lyric's standard name for a beloved treated as property in the only sense the language permits: something whose loss leaves the owner destitute. Its title places it at the point where Nala, ruined and possessed, walks away from his sleeping wife in the forest. No singer credit is recorded in the surviving catalogues.

The Music

The abandonment lament was the one situation in a 1940s mythological where a composer was expected to write his most sustained melody, and Ramchandra Pal — trained under Ustad Badal Khan, and a composer of about twenty film scores — had the equipment for it. Nothing beyond that can be stated: the recording is not in circulation and no notation survives. The only contemporary opinion is Filmindia's blanket verdict of July 1945 that the score would have contributed less to the film's boredom had it not been written at all.

The Poetry

Hindi film lyric had a small, precise vocabulary for what is lost when a beloved leaves, and jeevan dhan is the most economical of its terms: not 'my love' but 'my life's capital'. The word dhan brings the language of property into a song about a person, and in the Nalopakhyana that is exactly right, because the story's engine is a game of dice in which everything a man owns is staked and lost. Nala loses a kingdom to Pushkar and then, believing himself a curse on her, gives up the one possession the dice did not take. A lament that calls the departed beloved 'wealth' is quietly indicting the logic of the whole tale.

The Story

The forest abandonment is the darkest passage of the Nalopakhyana and the reason the tale carries moral weight rather than merely romantic charm. In the Janak Pictures version Prithviraj Kapoor played Nala and Shobhana Samarth Damayanti; Filmindia's July 1945 review, hostile throughout, summarised the second half as the couple going through 'the usual vicissitudes providing them with an acid test to prove their mettle'.

The Legacy

No recording of the song is known to be in circulation, and it did not enter the 1940s repertoire of separation songs that later listeners inherited. Its place in this catalogue is as the eighth and final title of a documented but effectively lost score.

Margin Notes

Filmindia complained that the sequence in which Pushkar demands a share of Nala's kingdom had been written with a deliberate 'Pakistani touch' — an example of a 1945 mythological absorbing the politics of partition.

Nal Damyanti opened at the New West End cinema, Bombay, on 9 June 1945; by August, Liberty Pictures were advertising it at the same house as being in its third month.

No playback singer is recorded for any of the film's eight songs in either the HindiGeetMala or the BollySwar/MySwar listings derived from the Hindi Film Geet Kosh, so the singer credits for this song are left empty rather than guessed.
