Biography

Hasrat Jaipuri, born Iqbal Hussain in Jaipur in 1922, was one of the most beloved lyricists of Hindi cinema's golden age. Schooled in Urdu and Persian poetry in his hometown, he moved to Bombay around 1940 and spent nearly eight years working as a bus conductor while reciting his verse at mushairas. It was at one such gathering that Prithviraj Kapoor heard him and recommended him to his son Raj Kapoor, who was assembling the team for Barsaat (1949). Hasrat's very first recorded song, 'Jiya Beqarar Hai', became a sensation, and alongside Shailendra and the composer duo Shankar–Jaikishan he formed the songwriting core of RK Films for the next two decades. His pen produced some of Hindi film music's most enduring romantic lines: 'Rasik Balma' (Chori Chori, 1956), 'Ehsan Tera Hoga Mujh Par' (Junglee, 1961), 'Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padh Kar' (Sangam, 1964) and 'Sun Sahiba Sun' (Ram Teri Ganga Maili, 1985). He won the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist twice — for 'Baharon Phool Barsao' (Suraj, 1966) and 'Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana' (Andaz, 1971). Known for the direct, ardent sweetness of his love songs, Hasrat Jaipuri died in Mumbai on 17 September 1999, leaving a catalogue of over two thousand songs.
