Biography

Feroz Nizami (born Ferozuddin Ahmad; 10 November 1910 – 15 November 1975) was a music director, film-score composer, and classical singer born in Lahore, British India. He trained in Hindustani classical music under Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan of the Kirana gharana, and began his professional life as a singer at the All India Radio station in Lahore, later transferring to AIR Delhi and Lucknow before moving to Bombay to work in films.

He entered Hindi cinema in 1943 with Vishwas, composing alongside music director Chhelalal, and rose to prominence with the score for Jugnu (1947), one of the biggest musical hits of the decade. During his years in Bombay he was respected enough by contemporaries such as Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, and Dilip Kumar to be called the "Ustad of Bombay," and he is credited with helping introduce Mohammed Rafi to Hindi film playback singing.

Following the Partition of India in 1947, Nizami relocated to Pakistan, where he continued composing for films — including Dopatta (1952) — across a filmography of roughly 26 films in total, blending classical, semi-classical, thumri, and Western elements. In the late 1950s he taught classical music at the Alhamra Arts Council in Lahore, and he also wrote several books on music theory, including ABC of Music, History and Development of Music, and Ramooz-e-Moseeqi, as well as an autobiography, Sarchashma-e-Hayat. He was the brother of Pakistani cricketer Nazar Mohammad and writer Siraj Nizami, and was married to Ghulam Fatima. He died in Lahore on 15 November 1975.
