Biography

Feroze Dastoor (30 September 1919 – 9 May 2008) was a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Kirana gharana who began his working life as a child performer in early Bombay talkies. Born into a Parsi family, he appeared in Urdu/Hindi films of the early 1930s — including a credited role as a child actor performing classical-style songs in Lal-e-Yaman (1933) — and by 1934 was carrying vocal credits on devotionally themed film songs such as "Aye Do Jahaan Waale Fariyaad Sun Hamaari," "Kar Tu Sakhaawat Aye Nek Bande," and "Aur Maula Ne Badi Shauqat Di Islam Ki." His deeper passion, however, was Hindustani classical music: he trained first under K.D. Jaokar and Balkrishnabuwa Kapileshwari and briefly under Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, before becoming a devoted disciple of Kirana gharana doyen Sawai Gandharva (Ramchandra Kundgolkar) — making him a gharana-mate of Bhimsen Joshi and Gangubai Hangal. He went on to become one of the Kirana gharana's foremost twentieth-century exponents, noted for a style close to that of Abdul Karim Khan, taught generations of students including at Mumbai University, and performed at the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival into his late eighties. He died in Mumbai in 2008.
