मोहब्बत के नग़्मे सुना दो

Feroze Nizami trained in classical music under Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan of the Kirana gharana and came to Bombay from a singer's post at All India Radio; Piya Milan is one of only two scores credited to him in 1945, the other being Sharbati Ankhen. The third of Nizami's five Nirmala Devi songs on the album and the second of Tanveer Naqvi's four lyrics. Nirmala Devi had been enrolled as a child with Ustad Ata Mohammad Khan of the Patiala gharana, who had earlier taught Begum Akhtar.

Naghma is the Persian-Urdu word for a melody or song, and asking someone to 'sound out the songs of love' is a request for a mood rather than for a repertoire. The self-referential turn - a film song that asks for songs - was a common device of 1940s lyric writing, and it let a picture stage a musical number without needing a stage. Tanveer Naqvi wrote the words.

Piya Milan (1945) was produced by Wadia Movietone and directed by S. M. Yusuf, with Motilal as the male lead and the eighteen-year-old Nirmala Devi as his leading lady. Wikipedia's list of Hindi films of 1945 classes the picture as a social, and the surviving record catalogues agree on an eleven-song album, every number composed by Feroze Nizami. No print of the film is known to circulate, so the songs and their credits are effectively all that survives of it. The song is documented in both hindigeetmala's and MySwar's track listings for the film, which agree on its singer and, where one exists, on its lyricist.

Like most of the album this song survives only as a catalogue line. Its interest is as evidence of how Nizami distributed a score two years before Jugnu (1947) made him a name across the subcontinent.
