Synopsisलाहौर के हिंद पिक्चर्स की 1943 की एक सामाजिक ड्रामा, निर्देशक नज़ीर द्वारा, जो दो घनिष्ठ सहेलियों की मित्रता और उसे परखने वाली भावनात्मक उलझनों के इर्द-गिर्द बुनी गई है। ईश्वरलाल प्रसिद्ध नर्तकी-अभिनेत्री सितारा देवी के साथ प्रमुख भूमिका में हैं, और याक़ूब, माजिद, उर्मिला तथा अनवरी सहायक भूमिकाओं में। उस दौर की अधिकांश व्यावसायिक फ़िल्मों की तरह सरल मेलोड्रामा कथानक मुख्यतः पंडित गोबिंद राम के गीतों और हसरत लखनवी की शायरी के लिए एक माला का काम करता है।

A 1943 social drama from Lahore's Hind Pictures directed by Nazir, built around the friendship of two close girlfriends and the emotional tangles that test it. Ishwarlal plays the male lead opposite the celebrated dancer-actress Sitara Devi, with Yakub, Majid, Urmila and Anwari in support. As with much of the era's commercial cinema, the spare melodramatic plot served chiefly as a frame for Pandit Gobind Ram's songs and Hasrat Lakhnavi's verse.

Pandit Gobind Ram composed the full score to Hasrat Lakhnavi's lyrics. Documented voices on the soundtrack include G. M. Durrani — whose 'Ye Kaun Aaj Reh Reh Ke Yaad Aa Raha Hai' is the best-remembered number — alongside Rajkumari and Sitara Devi. The surviving HMV catalogue lists eight to nine sides, mixing romantic solos with lighter friendship-and-youth songs.

Hind Pictures was the Lahore-based banner under which Nazir Ahmed Khan worked through the early 1940s. Salma's screenplay, dialogue and lyrics were credited to Hasrat Lakhnavi (Hasrat Lucknowi), while music came from Pandit Gobind Ram. The pairing of Nazir and Sitara Devi on this and adjacent films coincided with their off-screen marriage.

Salma sits at the centre of one of the most storied off-screen romances of 1940s Hindi cinema — it was during this Hind Pictures period that director Nazir (Nazir Ahmed Khan) married his leading lady Sitara Devi. Musically it belongs to the prolific but now under-documented catalogue of Pandit Gobind Ram, a composer who scored some 32 films and over 300 songs between 1937 and 1955 yet remains a footnote beside the era's bigger names.
