The Ghazal Before Recording

The ghazal, that most refined of Urdu poetic forms, was traditionally the domain of high culture. Ghazals were recited in the courts of emperors and the drawing rooms of the aristocracy. They were poetry for the educated, for those who could appreciate the intricate web of allusions, the philosophical sophistication, the emotional subtlety encoded in every couplet. The ghazal was, in a very real sense, the opposite of folk music — it was elite, exclusive, intellectually demanding.

But the ghazal was also a form dominated by women singers. From the seventeenth century onwards, the courtesans and tawaifs of the subcontinent had been the primary performers of ghazals. They had the training, the voice, the stage presence, and most importantly, the freedom from social constraints that allowed them to perform in public. A respectable upper-caste Hindu woman couldn't sing ghazals publicly without destroying her reputation. Even for Muslim women, the social restrictions were severe. The tawaif, by contrast, had adapted to performance as a profession and had developed the institutional structures (training lineages, patronage networks, professional associations) necessary to sustain the art form.

As a result, the ghazal had become coded as a 'feminine' form — not only because women performed it, but because it was associated with the emotional expressiveness, the vulnerability, the focus on personal feeling that Victorian culture attributed to femininity. Male singers had largely been excluded from the ghazal tradition, confined instead to the more 'masculine' forms like khayal.

Peara Saheb's Entry

Peara Saheb (also spelled Piyara Saheb) came from a hereditary musician family of the Khardar caste — a Muslim community of professional musicians. Unlike upper-caste Hindus, musicians of the Khardar caste had the traditional freedom to perform professionally, and unlike tawaifs, they carried no social stigma. Peara Saheb inherited a musical tradition that included both khayal and ghazal, and by the 1890s, he had established himself as one of Delhi's finest male vocalists.

But the recording industry initially bypassed him. In the first wave of recording (1902-1904), the Gramophone Company focused on the most famous artists — and most of those were women. The logic was commercial: Gauhar Jaan and Zohra Bai already had large fan bases and reputations that would drive sales. Why invest in recording a male vocalist, however talented, when the female singers were proven sellers?

Peara Saheb's breakthrough came with Beka Records. The German label, looking to differentiate itself from Gramophone's established roster, decided to invest in male vocalists. In 1905, they offered Peara Saheb a recording contract, and he entered the studio ready to show that the male voice could deliver ghazals with equal depth, equal sophistication, equal emotional power as the female singers who had dominated the form.

The Deep Voice of Philosophy

Peara Saheb's voice was distinctive — deep, warm, with a quality that contemporary listeners described as 'philosophical.' This was partly texture (he had a naturally low voice), but it was also partly technique. He sang with a kind of meditative slowness, allowing each note to resonate fully, creating space for the meaning of the words to penetrate. His approach to the ghazal was fundamentally different from the female vocalists: where Gauhar Jaan might elaborate a ghazal through rapid ornamental passages, Peara Saheb allowed the ghazal to breathe.

When he recorded Piyu Bhaay Daras Dehu in 1905 for Beka Records, Peara Saheb was performing a ghazal (though in a khayal framework) that deals with absence, with longing, with the philosophical question of how the beloved can be both absent and present through memory and imagination. The poetry is exquisite, with multiple layers of meaning. The first couplet can be read literally (a lover longing for her beloved's return) but also metaphorically (the soul longing for divine union, a common theme in Sufi-influenced Urdu poetry).

Peara Saheb's interpretation foregrounded this philosophical dimension. His voice carries a seriousness, a gravity, that lifts the piece beyond mere emotional expression into something more conceptual. The recording captures him establishing a slow, meditative exploration of the raag Jaunpuri (itself a melancholic raag, particularly suited to themes of yearning and loss), and then gradually, almost reluctantly, allowing the emotional weight of the lyrics to shape his vocal interpretation. By the end of the recording, we hear a artist who has achieved a kind of musical meditation on absence and desire — transforming a classical entertainment form into something closer to spiritual practice.

Male Vocalism and Social Respectability

Peara Saheb's success on record had broader implications. He proved that male vocalists could master the ghazal tradition — not by imitating female singers, but by bringing their own vocal qualities and their own interpretive traditions to bear. More significantly, his success on record elevated the social status of male musicians. A century earlier, it had been unthinkable for a respectable man to become a professional musician. Music was women's work, or the work of low-caste musicians and courtesans. But the recording industry, driven by commercial logic rather than social hierarchy, had created new opportunities.

Peara Saheb became a model for other male musicians. By demonstrating that substantial income could be earned through recording, that respectability could be achieved through artistic excellence on record, he opened a path for young men from upper-caste families to pursue music as a professional career. The recording industry, paradoxically, was democratizing classical Indian music by making it economically viable for a broader range of social classes to participate as performing artists.

Moreover, Peara Saheb's recordings contributed to a reinterpretation of ghazal itself. As more male vocalists entered the tradition, the form was no longer exclusively feminine. It became a tradition that could encompass both male and female expression, both the elaborate ornamental style of female singers and the meditative, philosophically oriented style of male vocalists like Peara Saheb. The ghazal tradition was enriched by this diversity of interpretation and expression.

The Ghazal's Evolution

In 1905, at the very moment when the ghazal seemed to be crystallized as a form associated exclusively with female singers and urban courtesans, Peara Saheb demonstrated that it could evolve. His recordings showed that the ghazal could be interpreted through a male voice, could be philosophically deepened, could reach audiences who might not have access to high-culture salon performances. The recording democratized the ghazal.

But there's a poignancy to Peara Saheb's achievement. His recordings represent the moment when the living ghazal tradition, which had been sustained through oral transmission and live performance in the courts and salons of the elite, had to be translated into recorded form to reach a broader audience. Just as Gauhar Jaan and Zohra Bai's recordings captured the tawaif tradition at the moment of its transformation, Peara Saheb's recordings capture the male ghazal tradition in transition. The ghazal, like all the forms recorded in 1905, was being preserved in time — archived, cannibalized, transformed by the technology that purported to capture it unchanged.

Yet there's also liberation in this story. Peara Saheb, born into a musician caste, was able to achieve a kind of cultural authority that might otherwise have been impossible. The recording gave him a voice — literally and figuratively — that transcended the social hierarchies that had confined musicians to the margins of respectable society. When his records were pressed and distributed, when listeners throughout India could hear his interpretation of the ghazal, he had achieved a form of immortality and a kind of freedom that the live performance tradition had never offered.
