The Monographपरिचय Overview

A Zohrabai Ambalewali solo from Laila Majnu (1945), composed by Pandit Gobind Ram to Tanveer Naqvi's words. This is one of the few songs in the film on which the sources agree without argument: both the song databases and the index compiled from the 78-rpm discs credit the vocal to Zohrabai alone. She was, in 1945, at the top of her profession — the voice behind Rattan the year before and one of the handful of women carrying the female half of Hindi film music through the middle of the decade.
The Music

Zohrabai's instrument was trained in khayal and thumri and it shows in everything she recorded: an open, full-throated tone with no breathiness in it, a slight nasal edge that carried well through the limited frequency range of shellac, and the confidence to sit on a note without decorating it. A slow film ghazal is written for exactly that voice — the phrases are long, the accompaniment stays underneath, and the singer's job is to hold the line steady rather than to move through it. Gobind Ram, working in the same north Indian idiom that Naushad had used for her the previous year in Rattan, gives her the space that kind of delivery needs.
The Poetry

The breath in the chest is one of the plainest images the ghazal has for the residue of a life that has otherwise been emptied out — what remains when everything else the lover had has been spent or taken. It is a body-level image rather than a decorative one, and it belongs to the register of poetry that measures survival in the smallest available units: one breath, one night, one more day of waiting. Placed in a Laila-Majnu film, that measurement is exact, because the story's second half is nothing but waiting that does not end well. Tanveer Naqvi's strength as a film lyricist was this kind of directness, phrased so it could be sung and understood in a single hearing.
The Story

Zohrabai Ambalewali came to Laila Majnu directly from the biggest soundtrack of the previous year: Naushad's Rattan (1944), where her four solos had made her the most recognisable female voice in the country. In 1945 she was recording constantly across banners, and Nazir's Hind Pictures would have engaged her as a matter of course. On this film she shared the heroine's playback with Amirbai Karnataki and Naseem Akhtar, the standard arrangement of the period, and took at least two of the twelve songs herself. Her position lasted only a few more years; from 1949 the female voice of Hindi cinema was reorganised around Lata Mangeshkar.
The Legacy

The song is not one of Zohrabai's remembered records — Rattan and a handful of other 1944-46 titles hold that place — but it belongs to the body of work that explains why she mattered. Historians of pre-Lata playback use exactly this kind of track to describe what the female film voice sounded like before it was standardised: heavier, closer to the classical stage, comfortable in a lower tessitura, and audibly the product of a training system rather than of a studio aesthetic. Once that sound went out of fashion it went out completely, which is why a modest 1945 solo now carries more historical weight than it did commercial weight at the time.

Margin Notes

Both the song databases and the 78-rpm disc index agree that Zohrabai Ambalewali sang this alone, which makes it one of the few uncontested credits on the film.

Zohrabai had recorded four celebrated solos for Naushad in Rattan (1944) the previous year, which is what made her a first-call voice for a 1945 production like this one.
