The Monographपरिचय Overview

"Saanjh Bhayi Ghar Aaya" closes the ten-song list of Sanyasi (1945). The credit is the one genuinely unsettled point in the film's discography: hindigeetmala gives the song to Shyam Kumar, who is also in the cast as Chetan, and the prose of the Wikipedia article names Shyam Kumar among the film's singers — but the same article's song table prints 'Shyam Sunder', and one archive transfer credits it as a group number with Shamim and Amar as well. This entry follows Shyam Kumar, the reading supported by two sources and by the cast list, and records the conflict rather than hiding it.
The Music

The surviving transfers run just under three minutes at an easy walking tempo, with the melody built on a short repeating phrase of the kind folk material is made of, and a light percussion bed underneath. Where the album's Urdu-register songs are vertical and sustained, this one is horizontal and cyclical — it goes round rather than up, which is the musical equivalent of the daily return the title describes. One archive upload gives the fuller title as 'Saanjh Bhayi Ghar Aaya Panchi', adding the bird that comes home at dusk.
The Poetry

'Saanjh' is the Braj and eastern-Hindi word for dusk, and dusk in this poetry is never only a time of day — it is the hour of return, of lamps, of the count of who is home and who is not. Adding 'panchi', the bird, makes the image explicit: the bird has come back to its nest, and the question the listener is meant to hold is who has not. In a film whose title character is a renunciate — a man who by definition does not come home — that image carries a specific sting. What Pandit Madhur does with it beyond the opening line is undocumented, and none of it is quoted here.
The Story

Shyam Kumar was a Kardar Studios regular of the period — Naushad's filmography lists him in the cast of Jeevan (1944) as well as Sanyasi — and the film gives him the role of Chetan. That an actor in the cast should sing one side of the album was entirely ordinary in 1945; what makes the credit hard to pin down is that catalogue transcription of 1940s discs is itself unreliable, and 'Shyam Kumar' and 'Shyam Sunder' are close enough to have been confused at some point in the chain between the shellac label and the modern listing.
The Legacy

Two transfers of the side survive, neither widely heard. Its interest now is largely evidentiary: it is the song that shows how quickly a credit can go unstable once the original disc stops circulating, and it is a reminder that even a well-listed 1945 soundtrack has soft edges. The song itself belongs to the large, unglamorous body of village-register numbers that carried the emotional continuity of 1940s Hindi films between their bigger set pieces.

Margin Notes'

This is the one song of Sanyasi whose singer credit sources genuinely disagree on: Shyam Kumar (hindigeetmala and the Wikipedia article text) versus Shyam Sunder (the Wikipedia song table).

One archive upload titles the side 'Saanjh Bhayi Ghar Aaya Panchi' and credits it to Shamim, Amar and Shyam Sunder together, suggesting the disc may in fact carry a group vocal.
