The Monographजीवनी Biography

Pahari Sanyal (born Nagendranath Sanyal, 22 February 1906 – 10 February 1974) was an Indian singer and actor whose career spanned Bengali and Hindi cinema for over four decades. Born in the hill town of Darjeeling — which gave him the nickname "Pahari," meaning "of the hills" — he briefly studied engineering at Benares Hindu University before turning to Indian classical music at the Morris College of Music in Lucknow, where he came under the influence of poet-composer Atulprasad Sen and became known as one of the finest interpreters of Atulprasad's songs.
Sanyal moved to Calcutta in 1932 and joined New Theatres, making his screen debut in 1933 as the singing actor Chand Bhatta in Debaki Bose's musical Meerabai (released in Hindi as Rajrani Meera), drawing on his classical training to establish himself as a singer-actor. Being fluent in both Bengali and Hindi/Urdu, he went on to star in a string of New Theatres bilinguals through the 1930s and 1940s, including Devdas (1935), Vidyapati (1937), Sapera (1939), and Milan (1946).
Over time Sanyal shifted from singing roles to character and supporting acting, appearing in later Hindi films such as Jagte Raho (1956) and Shakti Samanta's Aradhana (1969), and in Bengali films by Satyajit Ray, including Kanchenjungha (1962) and Aranyer Din Ratri (1969). He won the BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actor for Jaya (1965). Fluent in Hindi, Urdu, and English, and a reader of French literature in the original, he died in Calcutta in 1974.
