Prabhat's Duniya Na Mane (1937) — V. Shantaram's bold film in which Shanta Apte's Nirmala rejects a mismatched, deceitful marriage; a document of a woman's consent that stripped away the background score and wove its argument through an English song and the symbol of a broken clock.

Prabhat Film Company's Duniya Na Mane (Marathi: Kunku) was based on Narayan Hari Apte's novel Na Patnari Goshta. Under V. Shantaram's direction, the orphaned Nirmala — Shanta Apte — is tricked into marrying an elderly widower lawyer. But she never accepts the marriage in her heart; her quiet refusal becomes the film's true protagonist, a study in a woman's right to consent.

Shantaram banished the conventional background orchestra — on screen you would hear only sound that truly existed in the scene. Composer Keshavrao Bhole was uneasy with this insistence, yet it bred a startling experiment: a full English song sung by Shanta Apte, drawn from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem 'A Psalm of Life'. The lyrics for the film's other songs were written by Shantaram Athavale.

The film's most memorable image is a broken wall-clock — stopped time, the old husband's halted life, and the mute witness to a mismatched marriage. Without a heavy score, that plainness cuts even deeper. Duniya Na Mane won both critical and popular acclaim and was shown at the Venice International Film Festival in 1937, carrying its argument about a woman's consent onto a world stage.
