Dastan (1950) was produced and directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar — the same producer who had backed Rattan (1944), again with Naushad as composer and Shakeel Badayuni as lyricist, recreating one of Hindi cinema's most commercially productive creative partnerships. The film starred Raj Kapoor and Suraiya in a tragic melodrama told in flashback, inspired by the American film Enchantment (1948). Suraiya held a unique position in this era: almost alone among female film stars of the period, she sang all her own songs on screen, resisting the playback system that had replaced on-screen singing for most actresses since the late 1930s. Dastan's soundtrack is entirely her voice, sung in character, and Kardar built the production partly around the credibility her dual actress-singer status gave the story. Critics noted that her performance outshone co-star Raj Kapoor's. Dastan became the third highest-earning Hindi film of 1950. Within this framework, 'Ta Ra Ri Ya Ra Ri' — a light, syllabic, dance-inflected number — provided the album's playful counterweight to the film's essentially tragic register.
