The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Koi Ummeed Bar Nahin Aati' is the best-known number from Chauranghee (1942), a setting of one of Mirza Ghalib's most beloved ghazals of disillusionment. It is historically remarkable for being composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam — Bengal's Rebel Poet — in his only Hindi film venture, where he scored alongside Hanuman Prasad Sharma. As with the rest of the film, the original playback singer is undocumented in HFGK and the Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema.
The Music

Kazi Nazrul Islam sets Ghalib's couplets in a grave, unhurried filmi-ghazal mode, the melody yielding fully to the metre and weight of the verse. That Bengal's most fiery poet turned to one of Urdu's supreme ghazals for his single film score is part of the song's enduring fascination.
